What does “Tampa” actually mean? The answer is more mysterious than you might think.
The name may have originated from a Native American village near Charlotte Harbor, nearly 100 miles south of Tampa Bay. And the popular translation “sticks of fire”? Historians say the evidence just doesn’t support it.
The name of our city may have a completely different origin than most people realize. by @southcedarre

This entire neighborhood, the homes, the yacht club, even the hospital, didn't exist a hundred years ago. Tampa built it, literally, out of the bay. 👀

Where Davis Islands sits today, there were only two scrubby little islands at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, Big and Little Grassy Island. Together they were barely 120 acres, and the smaller one disappeared completely at high tide.

In January 1924, Tampa real estate man D.P. Davis came home from the Miami land boom with about five million dollars and a plan to buy those mudflats, win the state's permission to fill them in, and build an island big enough for an entire neighborhood.

He took that fight all the way to the Florida Supreme Court and won. Then his dredge crews spent over a year pumping sand straight out of Tampa Bay. 120 acres of mud came out the other side as 834 acres of buildable land, nearly seven times the size.

That fill never fully settled the way natural land does, so most homes on Davis Islands don't just sit on a slab. Builders drive pilings down through it to reach firmer ground. If you're buying a lot here, that's a major cost to factor into your budget.

Part of that new land became a nine-hole golf course, the Davis Islands Country Club, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, a golf architect known for some of the country's top clubs. It didn't even last thirty years. By the 1950s, the city had carved it into home lots instead.

Today, Davis Islands is one of the most sought-after addresses in Tampa, and every square foot of it was built by hand less than a hundred years ago.

Sometimes the best real estate in town isn't found. It's made.

That's Tampa.

This building cost three million dollars to build in 1891. Less than fifteen years later, the City of Tampa bought it for a fraction of that. 👀

Railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant spent three years building this Moorish Revival resort, with six minarets, 511 rooms, and a length of a quarter mile. When it opened on February 5th, 1891, its rooms were among the first in Florida wired for electric light.

In 1898, Tampa became the staging ground for the Spanish-American War, and this hotel became its unofficial headquarters. Theodore Roosevelt kept a suite here and drilled his Rough Riders on these very grounds before they shipped out for Cuba.

After Plant died in 1899, the hotel's fortunes faded fast. In 1905, the City of Tampa bought the hotel and its grounds for just $125,000. In 1933, the city leased it to a brand new school that needed a home, Tampa Junior College, which would grow into the University of Tampa.

Today it's a National Historic Landmark, and the same minarets built to lure Gilded Age tourists still define the Tampa skyline. Full disclosure, this one's personal for Greg. It's also where he got married.

A three-million-dollar hotel sold for a fraction of its cost, saved by a university that needed a home, and still standing more than a century later because somebody kept finding it a new use.

That's Tampa.
