We’ve partnered with Support Act to bring two FREE workshops to Headland Writers Festival this October.

Creative Minds — practical tools for building a healthier, more sustainable creative career.

REWIRE — mental health and wellbeing for creative work, including recognising when someone might be struggling, starting conversations and knowing where to find support.

Writers, artists, musicians, producers, freelancers, arts workers and creative business owners — this is for you!

Both workshops are FREE, but registration is essential and places are limited.

What’s coming up across the South East?

Festival season is here. Save these dates, bring a friend and get out to support the people making things happen across our region.

This weekend:
✨ Bega Streetlight Festival — Friday 25 September, from 5pm on Carp and Church Streets. Explore light projections, music, food and the Snapshot of Belonging photography display. Poetry competition finalists will read at Candelo Books from 6.15pm.
🎨 River of Art — 25 September–5 October across the Eurobodalla. It begins with the River of Art Prize and festival launch in Moruya on Friday evening and continues across the Eurobodalla with exhibitions, open studios and more
🎭 POV at Headland Theatre, Tathra Hotel — 25–26 September.
🎶 Tilba Festival — Saturday 26 September, 9.30am–4pm in Central Tilba, with music, food and entertainment for all ages.

Exhibitions and school holidays:
• 3 Ways at Spiral Gallery, Bega — until 30 September
• Susurrus at The Bas, Moruya — until 17 October
• Karla Dickens’ Recovery Mission and Helen Britton’s The Story So Far at SECCA, Bega — free entry, until 21 November
• @jindabyneartgallery’s Nuggets pop-up — final listed opening day 2 October

And if you’re in Cooma, visit the Monaro Art Group Gallery and Raglan Gallery to discover local artists. The Dragons and Gold Grassland Earless Lizard display is on at the Cooma Visitors Centre, 119 Sharp Street, daily from 9am–3pm until 30 September.

A useful local funding opportunity is closing soon.

Eurobodalla Shire Council’s Community Wellbeing and Community Events grants offer up to $2,000 for community projects and events taking place in 2027.

Applications close at 11.59pm on Wednesday 30 September.

Also open now:

• Festivals Australia — participatory arts projects at regional festivals
• FRRR Small & Vital — up to $10,000 for community-led rural projects
• Createability — funding for NSW organisations to host paid internships for Deaf and Disabled arts workers

Poetry belongs to everyone.

This Friday night, hear the finalists in the Bega Streetlight Poetry Competition share their work inspired by this year’s theme, "A Snapshot of Belonging".

Drop into Candelo Books from 6.15pm, listen to some wonderful local voices and hear the winners announced—then head back out to enjoy the art, food, music and lights of the broader Bega Streetlight Festival.

If the evening leaves you wanting more poetry in your life, connect with @sidepocketbega and the Ocean Mic Poets to discover more opportunities to listen, write and share locally.

A live performance of @ElizabethWalton.au composition, “And Your Wings May Fly,” featured improvised dance by @fling_physicaltheatre and live painting by @justintimepearson Justin Pearson. The event, held at @fourwindsau launched Elizabeth's poetry cycle, “How To Read A City, Your Place of Last Resort” published by @5islandspress.
"Exquisitely sensitive movement responding to our live performance of my composition, And Your Wings May Fly. Christopher Wade and MayaRae Navarrete are incredibly talented dancers, who worked intuitively with our live, improvised music. Piano (Elizabeth Walton) improvised guitar (Davey Hilder) synth and percussion (Richard Lawson). I am really looking forward to working with these artists again. We are delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2026 Olga Masters Short Story Award.

Congratulations to our four shortlisted writers:

- Sandra Barnett (NSW) — Back to Feltan Lane
- Jodie Haid (NSW) — Bounce
- Gizelle Regan (NSW) — I Love Paris… I Love Eden
- Michelle Bertram (NSW) — Three Millimetres

Selected by this year’s judges, Dr Sarah Nicholson and author Michael Winkler, these four stories emerged from a wonderful field of entries from writers across Australia.

A huge congratulations to Sandra, Jodie, Gizelle and Michelle — and thank you again to every writer who shared their work with us this year.

The winner and runner-up will be announced at the Headland Writers Festival Opening Night, from 6.30pm on Friday 23 October at Tathra Hotel.
