#businessappreciationweek kicked off yesterday! We were able to join in the kickoff with Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation then head to The Gardens at Homestead Gardens. This is a gorgeous venue that accommodates 120 guests. Many aspects to the area including a chapel, tented space, open air space, pathways, fire pit and a private area. Pictures don’t do this space justice, it’s a must see for yourself! Great for celebrations of all types including retirements, birthdays, corporate events and weddings.

Good evening, Chair Hummer and members of the County Council.

My name is Julia Howes, and I am here today on behalf of the Southern Anne Arundel Chamber to speak about Bill 61-26 from the perspective of small businesses, agriculture, and food trucks in Anne Arundel County.

Small businesses are a major part of what makes our communities unique. For many people, starting a small farm, opening a food business, or operating a food truck is not just a business decision. It is a way to support their families, create local jobs, and provide services and products to their neighbors.

Agriculture and small food businesses also work closely together. Local farms provide food to our communities, while food trucks and other small food businesses give farmers additional opportunities to reach customers and sell local products. These businesses often operate on much smaller margins than large companies, so changes to zoning requirements, permitted uses, parking, or operating conditions can have a significant impact on whether a small business can continue to operate.

I understand that the County has legitimate reasons for updating its zoning code, including public safety and making the rules clearer. However, I ask the Council to carefully consider how these changes will affect the small businesses and agricultural operations that are already part of our communities.

A regulation that may seem manageable for a large business could create a much greater burden for a family farm, a small farm stand, or a food truck owner who is trying to build a business from the ground up.

I encourage the Council to listen to the people who will be directly affected by these changes and make sure small businesses, farmers, and food-truck operators have a realistic opportunity to understand and comply with the new requirements.

Thank you for your time and for allowing me to speak today. by @southernaachamber
