What a great day yesterday at the Adreno Dive Fest!

A massive thanks to everyone who stopped by for a chat and showed their support for Southern Freedivers.

And a big thanks to Adreno for making it all happen. Fantastic to see the diving community come together!

It was also great spending the day alongside Cobb Australia. Those coral trout fish burgers were unreal! 🐟🔥

One of our biggest takeaways from yesterday was just how strong the spearfishing and freediving community is. We spoke to spearos from all over Australia, shared plenty of stories and had some great conversations about where we’re taking the club.

One thing was really clear. We’re all connected by the same things. Our love for the ocean, adventure, mateship and the sport.

Southern Freedivers has a proud history, and we’re building on those foundations with a vision to once again become a powerhouse in Australian spearfishing.

For us, that means building a strong, inclusive community where knowledge is shared, friendships are made and everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and excel.

Our new direction is pretty simple.

DIVE. LEARN. COMPETE. CONNECT.

More pairs diving, more shared knowledge, more social adventures and plenty of healthy competition. All built around safety, respect for the ocean and looking after each other.

And from the conversations yesterday, it’s clear the wider community is right behind us!

Here’s what’s coming up!

📅 Next Club Meeting | Tuesday 10 November
We’ve moved our meeting to the Tuesday after Melbourne Cup weekend. Everyone welcome!

🦞 Lobster Boat Day | 16 November
A great opportunity to get out on the water together.

🏆 Valdez Pairs Competition | 22 November
Teamwork, mateship and a bit of healthy competition!

We’re looking forward to catching up with everyone we met yesterday and building stronger ties with spearos and clubs right across Australia.

Whether you’re an experienced spearo, just starting out or simply love the ocean, we’d love to have you involved.

Mateship. Adventure. Ambition.

The future of Southern Freedivers is looking strong! 🤙🌊

The Sorrento boat dive turned out to be an absolute awesome day on the water. A little mist in the morning made for an interesting start but by 10am the sun was out and the wind was dying off to nothing. Even after all the rain we still managed to find so decent vis, although it was patchy. Large swell meant that everyone stayed inside the bay. By the afternoon the wind was almost absent and by the end of the day port Phillip was a glass out!
This was the first dive with the new scoresheet so catches were much smaller than other years. Flatties seemed to be people preferred fish of choice as nearly everyone weighed one in with a couple of good specimens coming in from Brendon and Kim.

And the results are as follows:

Kim Adair 4 species 494.1pts 100%
Brendon Waller 4 species 484.05pts 97.96%
Kade Beckley 4 species 455.5pts 92.18%
Anthony Zang 4 species 454pts 92.44%
Paul Dorfstatter 3 species 385pts
Stoj Pavlovski 3 species 345.95pts 70.01%
Darragh Fitzsimmons 3 species 345.1pts 69.84%
Brett Illingworth 3 species 323.7pts 65.51%
Jarvis Espie 2 species 220.25pts 44.57%
Odie Charles 2 species 211.65pts 42.83%
Alan Fitzsimmons 1 species 114.45pts 23.16%
Shane Fitzsimmons 1 species 109.75pts 22.21%
Kurt Beckley 1 species 108.05pts 21.86%
Alan Salek 1 species 104.65pts 21.17%
Spencer Gubbins 1 species 104.3pts 21.1%

Congrats to everyone who dived today! Shoutout to Alan for cooking the bbq and Kim and Odie for doing the scores. #spearfishingvictoria #southernfreedivers by @southernfreedivers

Club President Kim managed to grab a beast of a crayfish over the weekend whilst the weather was good - nudging just over 4kg. Great work, Kim!

It’s not a barrel but it’s still a tuna! There’s heaps of school tuna around and they’re heaps of fun on light gear.
