Assistance dog teams in further education?

Everyone presumes or likes to box us into a one size fits all approach. Many making the assumption as handlers with varying disabilities we are unable to pursue our dreams and careers. Whilst it isn’t an easy road it’s one that can be followed and in so many different sectors!

Here are a few teams that are in further education and what they are studying!
In order:
📝Charlotte and Percy, studying Creative Writing @percyassists
🪡Rebecca and Roo, studying Fashion and Textile Design @a_fox_in_fashion
⛑️Drew and Sol, studying a Masters in Health Law @sol_standard.poodle
🩺Morgan and Sabbath, studying Veterinary Medicine and Surgery @southernsuperpaws
🐾Chloe and Bella, studying a Level 3 in Animal Management @assistance.bella
⚕️Axel and Brie, studying Health and Social Care @thehazeofher
🧬Megan and Lyra, studying a PHD in Bioformatics, Moleculsr and Structural Biochemisty @lyra_ad_adventures
👩‍⚖️Daisy and Jarvis, studying Law @lifeofasuperdog
⚓️Sarah and Honey, majoring in Vessel Operationd and Technology

And this was only a snippet of teams that came forward! I couldn’t fit everyone in! So first off we can do anything, and secondary don’t put us in a box!

Thank you to everyone that shared their interest and got involved! Special thank you to all the teams that took the time to take videos and also be brave enough to be on camera!

Finally we can reveal our big news!

WE ARE OFFICIALLY A “QUALIFIED” TEAM!

We took our PAT on the 29th of December. We ventured through hobbycraft, PetsAtHome, Next, Greggs and a very busy Tescos. Sabbath took it all in her stride. And our only pointers were to keep working on boots up sabbath’s bum (where she’s been kicked a lot she’s quite wary. It doesn’t hinder her ability to work but it’s still something to watch) and then my own handling and trusting in Sabbath more. I stress handle which turns into micromanaging- this is something I’m really trying to work on this year🥰
Huge thank you to @relyingonralph who did our PAT, and did not take it easy on us! 💗

But anyways very excited to start ordering some new gear 🥰

There will be some of our in training gear up for grabs on my stories soon so keep an eye out 🩷

Happy friyay gorgeous puppers. Love this audio so much I couldn’t resist. It’s definitely starting to feel like summer, Nellys a little sun worshipper, so much so I have to drag her out of the sun to stop her overheating cause she’s a muppet.

Want to know someone’s true feelings on consent?
Tell them they can’t pet your dog.

Simple and scarily shows people’s true feelings. Because if they won’t listen to that simple instruction what else won’t they do. And this post isn’t just about dogs.

Some things never change 🐾✨

However I didn’t think I’d be a poodle girl when I was younger. 🐩

Which McDonald’s THE DOG toy did you get? I had the beagle and poodle.
OR
What dog did you have in Nintendogs?
Tell me in the comments!

“How having a disability has become cool.”

I wanted to do a post about this specific Telegraph article when it was released but I really wanted to think about what I was going to say.

Disabilities and chronic illness is not a trend, maybe now with social media and increasing medical understanding we are just now being heard. It’s about time women’s health was listened to.

Having an assistance dog at vet school is not a one size fits all approach. I’ve had to adapt to working with and without her depending on placement and scenario.
As a handler I have to mitigate myself with resources available to me. The ultimate resource is my medical alert dog. However management can also include a change in medication routine, monitoring and additional support.

FYI: I HAVE PASSED EVERY EVALUATION TO QUALIFY ME AS FIT TO PRACTICE. THERE WERE NO CHANGES BECAUSE PATIENT SAFETY COMES BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE.

@gardenvetsatkeele had the facilities to allow me to have Sabbath with me during my shifts, and it made a huge difference.
Having sabbath allows me to monitor less which drops my stress levels significantly, also her early alerts allow me to manage episodes quickly and sufficiently to where most of the time I can prevent an episode.

No she’s not in consults or surgeries. Her safety as well as patient safety is paramount.

September is suicide awareness month.

And it’s something I think is exceptionally important to highlight not only for myself but for my fellow colleagues especially at the moment.
@whitecoatduo did a post on this a little while ago and I thought I would do something similar but specifically data and statistics for U.K. vets as this is where a majority of my audience live.

Pets are family members and often times frustrations with care and cost become targeted at the same sector. And that is veterinary professionals.
Could you imagine going to work everyday and being told you don’t care, you are a sellout and you enjoy taking money from people.
That is a reality for us. Even as a student working in my vacation weeks, long nights with no pay to make sure I can develop the best knowledge I can to look after other people’s pets, I have faced quite significant client abuse. And I think you’ll agree the stats are shocking.

No professional should ever have to face abuse. But it is far too common in all aspects of medical care and public sectors.

As of current veterinarians are the highest at risk group and I will admit I am already part of those statistics. It doesn’t start when you graduate. The toll begins in the first few years of vet school. The help and support is getting better but it is still very minimal.

Be kind 🤍

And my parents always keep asking even when they know they’re going to cringe at what I tell them.

Couldn’t have wished for more supportive parents, stepmom, family and friends in my life. Even when I’m going to be making a living chopping off 🍒 and having my hand in the most obscene places. 🐄
They are all still there being my biggest cheerleaders.

OG reel idea: @cocovetmed

Make sure you follow along my unique vet school journey through FINAL YEAR!!!

Share with any vet students, prospective vet professionals and anyone you think would be interested!
