Blue-and-white Flycatcher or Japanese Flycatcher

It breeds in Japan and the adjacent north-eastern Asian mainland - Korea, parts of north-eastern China and Russia. In winter, it migrates through Southeast Asia, largely in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Borneo and Java. It has been recorded as a vagrant in Sinharaja Rainforest in Sri Lanka and Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park in Bhutan.

In India, there have been sporadic wintering records since 2012 from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, and also from Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Andaman Islands. (Source: indianbirds.in)

Beat the heat!

Unlike most cats, tigers have a strong affinity for water and are exceptional swimmers. On scorching summer afternoons, they love wading into lakes and rivers to regulate their body temperature, keep cool, and even hunt.

The largest bee-eter: Blue-bearded Bee-eater

Unlike its smaller aerial cousins, this stunning beauty sits quietly in dense forest canopies. Found across the Western Ghats, Himalayan foothills, and Southeast Asia, it gets its name from the vibrant blue throat feathers that it fluffs up while making loud, croaking calls.

India's smallest woodpecker: Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpeckers

A delightful pair of Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpeckers spotted last weekend at Karnala. These tiny birds navigate slender, outermost branches that larger species can't support. They maintain their balance on vertical bark using stiff, specialized tail feathers as a supportive tripod.

The Jewels are Back: Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher

The monsoon jewels have finally returned to Karnala! This is my first sighting of 2026. While the delayed rains have put their nesting activity behind schedule, last week’s showers have them hard at work finishing up nesting holes along the still-dry stream banks.

Parwali at the Swimming Pool

During the last minutes of our safari, Parwali graced us with her presence at Dhikala’s famous "swimming pool". Just as the sun dipped below the western horizon, the landscape was bathed in a warm, soft light, perfectly illuminating her as she waded through the calm waters.

Watching the queen move with such quiet confidence in the golden glow was the ultimate finale to an unforgettable day in the wild.

The King's Salute

Encountering a massive bull elephant on the Dhikala main road is a humbling reminder of who truly rules the forests of Jim Corbett. Standing tall amidst the lush green canopy, he raised his trunk high in the air, a powerful gesture to sniff the breeze and sense our presence as he gracefully crossed the tar track.
