You're also welcome to join visits to Senators' offices before or after. GOOD TO KNOW - It's rain or shine, so dress for the weather. - If you have accessibility needs, feel free to bring a camp chair. - Bring a placard or sign! If you're planning a larger banner or art piece, please contact the organizers in advance. Hundreds of students, Indigenous community leaders, and allies protested Senator Heinrich's proposed permitting bill, the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 (BAAJA). The protest, organized by @yucca.nm, called for Congress to dismiss BAAJA and for a state data center moratorium. Sovereign Energy's Deputy Director, Marissa Naranjo, spoke about how this bill would undermine Tribal sovereignty and place sacred sites at increased risk. Marissa told the @abqjournal: “There's nothing clean about an energy transition that continues to sacrifice our Indigenous land, our Indigenous communities, our public land, while benefiting Silicon Valley and extractive industries.” Contact your representatives today about the BAAJA. by @sov_energy

We are encouraging students from all over Albuquerque to join us. Today, Sovereign Energy and a diverse group of more than 50 Indigenous, allied, national, and local groups signed on to a letter to the New Mexico congressional delegation opposing the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 (BAAJA), S. 5653, and calling for an immediate response from representatives. The letter reads in part: “The bill would weaken Tribal consultation, dismantle essential environmental and cultural protections, restrict Tribal and state authority to protect water quality, diminish opportunities for stakeholder involvement and public input, and would likely cause irreversible harm to Indigenous communities.” Read the full letter to learn more about how S. 5653 would harm Tribal sovereignty and sacred sites. by @sov_energy
Contact Senator Heinrich and the New Mexico Congressional Delegation about the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 TODAY. This bill, if passed, would have devastating consequences across New Mexico, from Greater Chaco and Mount Taylor to the Upper Pecos Watershed, and from acequia and land grant communities to our neighborhoods confronting large-scale data center development. Tribal Nations were not consulted in the development of legislation that would fundamentally change how their sacred places and cultural heritage are identified, evaluated, and protected. That exclusion is unacceptable. Many Tribes, Tribal Consortiums, and Tribal organizations across Indian Country have taken stances to oppose and urge amendment of the bill. The All Pueblo Council Governors has adopted a resolution opposing the bill as introduced. We support these positions and urge the NM Congressional delegation to respond with concrete action. You can use this sample script when calling or emailing your representatives: Hello, my name is [name], and I live in [community, ZIP code]. I’m calling to urge [Senator/Representative] to oppose BAAJA, S. 5653, as introduced. I’m concerned about its impacts on Tribal sovereignty and consultation, sacred places, water, public lands, and New Mexico communities. I urge you to preserve meaningful environmental review and the ability of communities to prevent irreversible harm. The @trustforpublicland and @yougovamerica released powerful results from their poll of Americans. The findings show widespread support for Tribes and Indigenous People to steward the land, including belief in land back. These results are especially important as the federal government considers the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 (BAAJA), which would completely undermine Tribal consultation regarding public land. If you too believe that Native people should retain the ability to shape public land decisions, urge the NM Congressional delegation to respond with concrete action. Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! We are celebrating Indigenous resistance, intelligence, defiance, culture, connection, sacred spaces, successes, knowledge, religion, history, and so much more. Sovereign Energy celebrates Indigenous advancements every day. We see the power of energy efficient building design, water conservation practices, and agricultural traditions. We also address threats to Tribal sovereignty and sacred sites by working with Tribal governments and Indigenous communities, Indigenous-led organizations at the local and national levels, policymakers, and environmental partners. Our work strengthens Southwest Pueblos’ and Tribes’ voices in developing and advocating for energy and sacred site protection laws, regulations, and infrastructure development decisions that maximize benefits for Tribes and Indigenous communities. . . . Today, and every day, we are Indigenous. by @sov_energy

Who are our Tribal Historic Preservation Officers? And why is their funding being threatened? Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs) are Tribal officials designated by their Nation, Tribe, or Pueblo. They are recognized by the National Park Service as cultural and sacred site officials. While each state has its own preservation officers, THPOs ensure that Tribes have technical officials functioning within the federal government. Learn about the current threat to THPOs: https://www.106strong.com/thelatest by @sov_energy
