Michael Sweet of Stryper and Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins are saying something I’ve felt for a long time: too much Christian music sounds like the same song and production with a different singer.

I want to see Christians make music that’s beautiful, distinctive, and artistically satisfying. Music the world wants to learn from and emulate.

I think we’re getting there, one step at a time.

One of the things I love about the Sower Project Collective is the freedom to write about whatever we want, as long as it’s consistent with Scripture. That includes confronting difficult things like the wickedness of abortion.

@jonathanallenwright was kind enough to include me alongside a number of other artists in the final episode of his series on Christian music.

He asked me to send in a video answering a few questions about the current state and future of Christian music. I shared some thoughts on the shift I hope we’re seeing toward authenticity, creativity, and substance, and why the souls of the artists making this music matter more than sales, streams, or industry success.

Making great music is only part of the challenge. Getting people to hear it is another.

After decades as a songwriter, producer, studio owner, and independent musician, Eric Tuffendsam knows that reality firsthand.

Through his solo project, Sower, Eric recently released Contrast. We’re grateful that a Faith in Music Foundation Recording Support Grant could help with some of the final pieces needed to get the album out into the world and in front of more listeners.

And the impact goes beyond one album. Eric is also using his experience to encourage other musicians, build community, and help independent artists move forward.
