Today is Telly’s birthday (at least, according to her adoption paperwork).

It’s hard to put into words what Telly meant to me over the past several years. I took her home from the ASPCA in 2018. I specifically wanted a black cat since I’d heard that they’re less likely to get adopted, and she just looked so sad in her picture on the website that I had to meet her. She was standoffish when we first interacted, but after sitting on the floor with her for a while, I said, “Well, what do you think?” She immediately came over and headbutted me, and my heart melted.

She was a difficult cat for the first couple of years, peeing on my bed from anxiety issues, the first of many health obstacles. I remember after we moved to a new apartment with friends, she surprised me by finally crawling into my lap one evening while we were hanging out on the couch. After that she was basically velcroed to me, in my lap whether I wanted her to be or not. We were intertwined. I keep looking for her at the foot of my bed because that was her favorite spot, right by my feet, more often than not on her heating pad.

We went through a lot, she and I—four apartments, two cities, a breakup, a handful of jobs, a pandemic. I could always count on her scratchy little meow to greet me at the end of the day. It’s an impossible decision to let an animal companion—she was much more than a pet—go. I love you, Telly, forever and ever.

Thank you to those who have sent their condolences. by @soylatted

Have to memorialize this evening’s meal at Miss Rachel’s! I’ve wanted to go here since before I moved to Philly and finally got the chance. The food and the experience exceeded every expectation. Plus the bathroom is SUPER cute. taken in Miss Rachel's Pantry by @soylatted

Paid a visit to the Wagner Institute today, a natural history museum in north-ish Philadelphia. It was a little overwhelming how much was crammed into the space! I had zero expectations going in, and was impressed by the sheer number of items, how well most of them had been preserved, and the knowledgeable staff. I didn’t take many pictures because I wasn’t 100% sure if we were supposed to, but the taxidermy and the wet specimens weren’t things I want living on my phone anyway. A few displays definitely gave me the heebie jeebies, but I always have fun visiting places like this and imagining the history behind them. And then I got a smoothie. taken in Wagner Free Institute of Science by @soylatted

I was lucky enough to go on a tour of Mount Vernon Cemetery today, thanks to @girlslikehorror and Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. This is a very special place. It is not open to the public. Stepping inside the gates felt like entering a time machine, and the gloomy weather only added to the spooky atmosphere. This is my new favorite place in Philadelphia and I hope I somehow get to go back someday. by @soylatted

On March 13, 2020, I had a great new job, was living in New York City with two close friends, and was all around pretty content with life. And we all know what happened next.

In 2020, I had no idea how much Covid would change my life. I got laid off from that job and had a really difficult time handling unemployment as my roommates shifted to WFH. I briefly worked at the Whole Foods in our part of the city, but left when we decided to move to Bay Ridge. I was incredibly unhappy. I ended up moving to Philadelphia in late 2021, something I’m not sure would have ever happened in an alternate timeline with no pandemic, and I’m working somewhere I never would have thought to work pre-2020.

It is important to me to recognize that the pandemic is still raging and is on the verge of becoming a “quademic” (Covid, bird flu, norovirus, and RSV). As of today, COVID-19 is still killing people every day. With the new administration and general attitude toward the pandemic, it is difficult to track just exactly how many are dying as a direct result of Covid because it’s been shoved under the proverbial rug, and most—including medical professionals—are essentially plugging their ears, closing their eyes, and refusing to listen to anything anyone says after the word “Covid.”

I moved away from masking in 2021/2022, around the time the administration told us it was okay to. It took me doing independent research and learning from the community around me, especially folks with Long Covid and myriad other conditions caused by prior Covid infections, to understand that it’s not over and we need to prioritize masking and clean air. I haven’t been inside a restaurant or a bar in months and honestly, if that’s what’s stopping you from taking precautions, it isn’t worth it. No party is worth permanent health issues.

I’ll end here with a plea to, at the very bare minimum, put on a mask when you’re entering an environment disabled and immunocompromised folks cannot avoid: doctors’ offices/hospitals, the pharmacy, public transit, and the grocery store. Take care of yourself, take care of your neighbors, and be well. by @soylatted

Another trip on the books! So happy to see my best friend get married that I sobbed while she exchanged vows with her new husband. Also so happy to see this large pig sculpture and revisit The Bean in “nearby” Chicago. Also, that soda tasted like cherry pie and was delicious but I think if I ever had another, I’d die. #travel #instalike #wisconsin #chicago by @soylatted

A few shots from my semi-spontaneous whirlwind trip to New York. I really miss it! Even though I got catcalled, yelled at by someone on the train, waited forever for a different train, ate something at Coney Island that made me sick, had to get off a train because delays were so severe, remembered how annoying it is to duck around tourists who don’t know how to walk at a normal speed, etc etc etc #onlyinnewyork by @soylatted
