Mi gente! I’m still taking it all in! What an incredible night celebrating Maestro Joe Bataan, the King of Latin Soul, and his remarkable 60 years in music!✨ On Saturday, October 24, now officially recognized as “Joe Bataan Day” in New York City, we gathered at the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture in the Bronx to celebrate a musical pioneer whose influence reaches far beyond El Barrio.✨ Of the many highlights from the evening, one that stands out was the opportunity to share two official proclamations recognizing Joe’s extraordinary contributions to music and culture. And there’s so much more to come! 🏛️ New York City Mayor’s Office: Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued the proclamation declaring October 24, 2026, Joe Bataan Day! We were also pleased to welcome William Giron, representing the Mayor’s Office, who personally presented the proclamation to Joe backstage, with members of his band and me there to witness the moment. 🏛️ Bronx Borough President’s Office: Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson issued a proclamation celebrating Joe’s remarkable career, cultural influence, and lasting contributions to the Bronx and beyond. Later, I had the privilege of presenting both proclamations to Joe onstage on behalf of their respective offices, allowing the audience to share in this historic occasion. Our sincere appreciation to both leaders for acknowledging Joe’s impact on our communities and his enduring artistic legacy.🙏🏼 And to Maestro Joe Bataan, gracias de corazón for trusting me to host this milestone celebration and be part of such a significant chapter in your journey. From being photographed by the legendary Danny Hastings to celebrating a legend whose music helped shape countless generations, mi gente… 🎶 On Saturday, October 24, I’ll have the privilege of hosting Joe Bataan: 60 Years of Salsa, and Latin Soul at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture in the Bronx! Known around the world as the King of Latin Soul, Joe’s journey began in El Barrio. From forming the Latin Swingers in 1966 to helping shape the sounds of Latin soul, boogaloo, and salsa, his music continues to influence generations. Joe’s contributions go far beyond the records. His music represents identity, community, resilience, and the cultural connections that bring us together. As the son of Cuban immigrants, a storyteller, educator, and lifelong student of our musical heritage, this opportunity carries a special meaning for me. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside pioneers who have changed how we experience music and culture. To now host this milestone in Joe’s remarkable career is both a professional privilege and a personal honor. This is more than an anniversary. It’s a celebration of six decades of music, history, and legacy. The song gained significant popularity in Europe, introducing Joe to new audiences and demonstrating his ability to recognize changing musical trends. DID YOU KNOW? 💎¿SABÍAS QUE?🎶 1975 | AFROFILIPINO 🇵🇭 For Joe Bataan, music and cultural identity have always been connected. Born to a Filipino father and an African American mother, Joe celebrated that heritage with the release of Afrofilipino on Salsoul Records. The album brought together Latin rhythms, soul, funk, and dance-music influences, reflecting the diverse sounds that shaped his artistry. At a time when artists were often placed into narrow musical categories, Joe proudly embraced an identity that was uniquely his own. Afrofilipino was more than an album title. It was a statement of heritage and pride. ✨Joe Bataan: 60 Years of Salsa & Latin Soul 🎶Musical guests: Frankie Morales (Singer), George Rodríguez (Singer), Angel Justiniano (Congas) 🎙️Hosted by: Giraldo Luis Alvaré 📅 Saturday, October 24 | 7:30 PM 📍 Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, Bronx, NY 🎟️ hostoscenter.org/events ☎️ 718-518-4455 Source: JoeBataanMusic.com | Salsoul Records #JB60 #JoeBataan #Afrofilipino #Salsoul #Culture by @sp.alwaysforward
DID YOU KNOW? 💎¿SABÍAS QUE?🎶 1973 | SALSOUL What happens when salsa meets soul? Joe Bataan had a name for it: Salsoul. Released on Mericana Records in 1973, Salsoul marked a new chapter in Joe’s career following his departure from Fania. Featuring his interpretation of Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Bottle,” the album combined Latin rhythms, soul, and emerging dance-music influences. The name would soon become associated with Salsoul Records, a label whose early identity Joe helped shape alongside the Cayre brothers. Another example of Joe’s influence extending beyond his own recordings. ✨Joe Bataan: 60 Years of Salsa & Latin Soul 🎶Musical guests: Frankie Morales (Singer), George Rodríguez (Singer), Angel Justiniano (Congas) 🎙️Hosted by: Giraldo Luis Alvaré 📅 Saturday, October 24 | 7:30 PM 📍 Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, Bronx, NY 🎟️ hostoscenter.org/events ☎️ 718-518-4455 Source: JoeBataanMusic.com | Salsoul Records #JB60 #JoeBataan #Salsoul #NYC #Bronx by @sp.alwaysforward
