This feels special ❤️

One of the things I cherish most about this work is getting to witness an actor discover something within themselves. Shyam gave me that experience many times over.

He is one of the most passionate and dedicated artists I have come across in my journey. What I admire most about him is the way he gives himself completely to a character. He spends time with it, questions it, practises it, lives with it and keeps searching until something begins to emerge.

I had the privilege of working with him on a project where he played a stage performer. We worked on nearly 18 different characters for that project. We travelled through Kathakali, Padayani, Kappuvera, Chavittu Nadakam and different contemporary actor training practices, searching for the flavour, rhythm and soul of each character.

But what stayed with me was not just the forms we explored.

It was the process of watching an actor discover.

My way of working with actors has always been about listening first. Listening to how the actor sees the character, how the director imagines it, and what the actor wants to discover through it. From there, the process takes its own shape.

I don't believe acting is about simply teaching techniques.

For me, it is about creating a space where an actor can search, question, fail, discover and slowly find their character.

And when that search becomes real, something magical happens.

You see the actor find a small piece of the character. Then another. And suddenly, for a brief moment, everything comes together.

Those are the moments that give you goosebumps.

Those are the moments that remind me why I love this work.

A two-day theatre workshop as part of the orientation programme at the Asian College of Architecture. ✨

It’s always lovely to begin with a new group and watch the ice slowly break. Strangers start connecting, people become more open to each other, and slowly, a sense of trust and togetherness begins to emerge.

Theatre offers a beautiful way to begin this journey. ❤️

Shuffled glides through terrains of silence, humour, grief, and hope – exploring what they offer… refusing to get pinned down to the linear, single narrative.

The work touches the personal and political – about the Hobson’s Choice (Take it or leave it), the pressures on the Adivasi ways of life, the limits of free-will – all anchored within the body, relationships, dreams, desires…

Card tricks appear throughout the performance to enhance intimacy, playfulness, and reflection.

The primary narrative draws from the perfomer’s memories of his mother: her life and her dying.

The autobiographical memories form a kaleidoscopic backdrop that reflects and highlights broader themes of freewill, choice, resilience, and perception.
