All that glitters should be gold. Beautiful jewels and their stories.

French Art Nouveau jeweler René Lalique was born on this day in 1860. He was perhaps most innovative and subtle in his combinations of enameling and precious stones, as seen in this work on view in gallery 556. René-Jules Lalique (French, 1860–1945). Pendant, ca. 1901. #TheMet #ReneLalique #antique #artnouveau #artnouveaujewelry #antiquejewelry #enamel #enameljewelry by @sparkling_stones

Kundan setting is the technique most closely associated with the jewelled arts of the Mughal emperors. By using pure, soft, 24-carat gold (kundan), the goldsmith can set gemstones directly into fragile enamelled surfaces or into engraved gem materials, such as nephrite jade and rock crystal. Here’s a pendant, gold with a sapphire, rubies, emeralds and diamonds in Kundan (pure gold) settings, enamelled on the back, probably Jaipur.
Watch our film on Facebook, shot in workshops in Mumbai and Jaipur, showing a jewellery craftsman kundan setting diamonds in an enamelled gold earring.
