Announcing the launch of SPARTA Stories: a new effort to collect YOUR stories (anonymously if needed) and utilize them for maximum impact.

Whether you’re a trans service member or veteran, the family member of one, or ally of one, your story matters — and can help move the needle in SPARTA Pride’s advocacy efforts. Submit your story today: spartapride.org/sparta-stories

Storytelling has the potential to change hearts and minds, influence legislation and policy, and dispel misconceptions. We want to hear what’s happening on the ground, about excellence in trans service, and the real consequences of harmful policies. We need to hear from military and veteran members who’ve been impacted. We also want to hear from those who served with trans troops or provide care to them.

Don’t believe the lies, myths, and misinformation. Transgender service members have been deploying successfully for the past decade, including in austere environments and on combat missions.

As SecDef’s new testosterone announcement shows, hormone medication can be prefilled in advance to take downrange and doesn’t impact readiness or lethality. Studies continuously prove it. And SPARTA Pride’s members are living proof.

A decade of open service for transgender troops.

Yes, open... because many of us are still here fighting, and history makes it clear. We will not be erased. You think this is our first ban? Hardly.

You think this is the first time a group of Americans has had to fight for the right to serve their country with dignity? Hell no.

And you think we’re going to back down now? Not a chance.

For ten years, transgender service members have led troops, deployed, commanded, jumped from airplanes, flown missions, stood watch, treated the wounded, and served across this force. Our qualifications, our records, and our service speak for themselves.

We took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. That oath didn’t come with an expiration date because someone decided we were politically convenient to target.

We joined because we believe in this country. We served because we believe its freedoms belong to all Americans. And we will continue to fight—relentlessly, alongside our partners—for the right of qualified Americans to serve.

We have been here before. Other generations had to fight to belong in the very military they were already defending.

Now it’s our turn. We don’t back down.

A decade of service speaks for itself.

We swore an oath to the Constitution, and we won't rest until we secure those unalienable rights;

Life. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness.

Tara Creekmore, a Navy sailor who deployed on the USS Abraham Lincoln, was about to take over her command’s avionics shop when the trans military ban dropped last year.

Not only had the prior experts already departed, but now Creekmore was being sent home. Read on to learn more about her experience and how this cruel policy hasn’t just ended thousands of careers — it’s left units without proper manning and harmed readiness and lethality across the entire force.

This is just one of many stories SPARTA Pride has collected that reveal how this policy is harming the entire military.

Recent medical screening are removing more transgender service members who are highly qualified. The transgender military ban has done nothing but harm our national security, destroy unit cohesion, and tank morale of units who lose a shipmate do to an unconstitutional policy.

One of our board members is one of them.

Anti-equality policies don’t just hurt LGBTQ+ service members; they hurt military families with LGBTQ+ kids. Ultimately, they pose a risk to readiness and retention.

Last week, the SPARTA Pride team brought a group of military parents of trans youth to Capitol Hill, representing thousands of other families like theirs. They met with Members of Congress and staffers to raise awareness of how harmful policies in the NDAA and beyond have impacted their families, and how the current NDAA would cause more damage. They shared how these policies and laws have already caused some of their families to leave the military.

Swipe to learn more about what they were advocating for and why it impacts the entire military.

Last week, SPARTA Families was on Capitol Hill telling the stories behind the policy.

Our families met with congressional offices to discuss the FY25 NDAA’s restrictions on health care for transgender military children and to explain how those decisions reach far beyond a doctor’s office.

Families spoke about the financial costs they have absorbed. They spoke about assignments and career decisions affected by their children’s access to care. They spoke about retention, readiness, and what happens when experienced service members are forced to weigh continued military service against the needs of their families.

While walking from the House side of Capitol Hill to the Senate side, we happened to cross paths with Don Lemon. SPARTA Pride’s Executive Director stopped to speak with him about SPARTA Families, the service of transgender Americans in uniform, and the broader environment facing National Security.

SPARTA Pride also raised its concern that transgender Americans are increasingly being treated as political scapegoats — a pattern our organization described as a renewed Lavender Scare.

History reminds us what happens when entire communities become convenient political targets. Our purpose on Capitol Hill last week was simple: make sure policymakers hear directly from the military families living with the consequences of these decisions.

These aren't abstract policy debates.

They are military careers.
They are family budgets.
They are children’s lives.
They are years of training and experience.
And they are American military families.

Their stories deserve to be heard.

At SPARTA Pride, we celebrate today’s 15th anniversary of the full repeal of the harmful Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, which destroyed thousands of careers and lives. But we cannot forget that the repeal only helped lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members; it left in place a long-standing ban on open transgender service.

We didn’t win that right until 2016, when thousands of us could finally serve as our full selves. Since then, we have twice faced renewed bans. Many of us survived the first, which allowed those already serving and transitioned to remain in. But we’re currently amid an all-out ban that’s already forced out thousands of us — and caused incalculable harm to us and our families.

We also recognize that the broader LGBTQ+ community has been deeply harmed by this administration’s discriminatory DoD and VA policies. For example, we’ve witnessed the forced closure of LGBTQ+ social and professional organizations and seen bases ban events, programming, and books.

And last year, the VA ended protections for LGBTQ+ veterans at their facilities, along with some medical care. Recently, the VA broke its promise and ended the vital LGBTQ+ Care Coordinators program and all funding for it.

So today, we celebrate the victory of 15 years of open service for lesbian, gay, and bisexual troops, but we also acknowledge the struggles this community now faces under the current administration. And we ask our allies to remember that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell left trans troops behind — and current policies turn their backs on us altogether.

As we mark 15 years since the repeal of DADT and over 10 years since the ending of the original trans ban, one thing is crystal clear: when LGBTQ+ troops can serve as their full, authentic selves without being forced to spend energy hiding, they can be even more effective, ready, and lethal. SPARTA Pride will keep fighting until all LGBTQ+ service members and veterans are treated with dignity and respect and have their rights restored and codified into law.

No one cares about pronouns in combat; just performance. Trans service members proved that time and time again with deployments to combat zones. We were qualified and met all standards (and heavily trained). Throwing slurs at our community clearly indicates the trans ban policy is founded on discrimination, not evidence.
