Bye, UT. It’s not me, it’s you.

It’s hard to feel any sort of pride for earning my degree at this institution. How do I feel proud when last year my peers were beaten, pepper sprayed, and arrested for speaking out against a genocide UT is complicit in? Or when the best professor I’ve ever had breaks down into tears because their department may be shut down due to DEI rollbacks?

How do I feel proud when UT; despite all the student voices calling for divestment, equality, equity, peace and love; chooses to stand with the oppressive Texas government over their own students? How can I care about an institution that doesn’t care about me or my peers?

This is not to say I am not grateful. I am. Because of UT, I met some of the people I love most in the world and created beautiful things with them. My crazy, talented, incredible friends embraced me from day one and stuck with me through everything. You helped me not only grow as an artist but also as a person. I wouldn’t be who I am today without y’all, and no words are enough to express how grateful I am for all of you.

Also because of UT, I will be doing two internships this summer in Los Angeles to finish off my degree. I am so grateful for the UTLA program leaders who helped me through that process.

I am also incredibly grateful and indebted to my parents for putting me through college. I wouldn’t have made it through without their unconditional support of me and my dreams.

There are so many good people doing good things at UT, but I will not let that cloud my vision. UT has a lot of work to do, and as long as I am a Texas Ex, I will never stop fighting with my peers who also want to see UT divest from weapons manufacturers, stop silencing student voices, reinstate DEI programs, lift the ban on drag performances, and overall, put their students first.

So, I guess technically this isn’t goodbye UT. But trust me when I say I’ll be in your inboxes so much you’ll wish it was.

I used to be so scared of crowds and loud noises that I would’ve never thought I’d ever go to a concert. For almost two years now I’ve been working really hard to test my limits and experience more new things. Luckily for me I got to work ACL this year and experience the festival after my shift. This was my first concert ever and I couldn’t be more grateful that it was a great experience. @hozier has such a great community of fans and a calming presence on stage himself that I felt very welcome and safe. (Now @auroramusic and @puptheband come back to Austin so I can see y’all too🙏🙏) by @spazzyart
