Believe it or not, your mental health is your greatest wealth. You can buy your dream house, car or have your dream job but if your mind is not functioning well , you will never enjoy them.

Yesterday, I had the incredible privilege of doing a workshop with a group of men at @this_generationministries.21. It was great sharing tips, techniques and hearing from the men. I sincerely believe that the time is now for all black men to invest in our mental wealth and learn strategies to equip the mind to withstand the pressures of life.

I am taking bookings for workshops in 2023. Please contact me if you would like me to support your church, business or school. by @speak.blackman

Meet Stephen Reid, mental health practitioner, trainee couples therapist, a lived experience expert and contributor to the Speak Black Man book.

In this video, Stephen shares his insight into why some Black men may shy away from therapy and the barriers that can prevent us from seeking psychological support.
In the book he highlights practical tools and strategies to help Black men begin their therapeutic journey, build emotional awareness, and engage with support in a way that feels safe and meaningful.

Therapy is not a sign of weakness, it is a pathway to growth, healing, and transformation.

Today, I celebrate two special milestones: my birthday and the launch of my new book, Speak Black Man.

After six years of early mornings, late nights, research, learning, networking, prayer, and making meaningful conversations, I’m proud to announce that Speak Black Man is now available for pre-order and will officially be released on 28th August.

This is more than a book. I’m honoured that the book also features contributions from incredible professionals and individuals with lived experience, making it an even richer resource for healing and growth.

Today, on my birthday, I have one request: please pre-order your copy and I’m giving you 20% off until 31st July. Simply use the discount code ā€œBIRTHDAYā€.

The gym has saved a lot of lives.

It gives people purpose, routine, discipline, confidence, and an outlet for stress. I know that because I love training myself.

But here’s the truth…
The gym is not therapy. It’s therapeutic, but it’s not therapy.
You can build the strongest body in the room while still carrying anxiety, trauma, grief, depression, or emotional pain that no one sees.

You can deadlift 200 kilos and still struggle to talk about what’s happening in your mind. Training your body is important, but don’t neglect your mental health.

Strength isn’t just measured by the weight you lift. Sometimes, real strength is asking for help, opening up, and allowing yourself to heal.

So keep going to the gym. Keep looking after your physical health. But if you’re carrying emotional weight too, don’t carry it alone.

Invest in your mind just as much as you invest in your body. by @speak.blackman

This work is heavy, and the weight of it can lead to deep emotional distress and battle fatigue. We need more people asking, ā€œHow can I help?ā€ and stepping forward with the courage to make a difference. by @speak.blackman

Yesterday at the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) Conference, I had the opportunity to reflect on some of the challenges affecting Black men’s access to leadership roles.

During my reflections, I spoke about the importance of increasing Black male representation in leadership across Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the wider psychological profession, and the NHS. We explored some of the barriers that continue to limit opportunities for Black men to progress into leadership, as well as the challenges many face once they attain these roles.

Too often, the reality of navigating systemic barriers, professional isolation, heightened scrutiny, and disproportionate pressures can contribute to stress and burnout, leading many talented Black leaders to leave leadership positions or decide not to pursue them at all. If we are serious about creating inclusive organisations, we must move beyond conversations about representation and commit to building environments where Black leaders are genuinely supported, valued, and able to thrive. by @speak.blackman

Exceptional Day 2 at the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) Conference.

Today I had the privilege of reconnecting with my fellow colleagues from the first cohort of the BABCP Leadership Training Programme. Together, we reflected on our leadership journeys, the impact of the programme, and how it has shaped our thinking and practice.

During my reflections, I spoke about the importance of increasing Black male representation in leadership across Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the wider psychological profession, and the NHS. We discussed some of the barriers that prevent Black men from accessing leadership opportunities and the challenges many continue to face once they do. Too often, the weight of navigating systemic barriers, isolation, and disproportionate pressures can lead to stress, burnout, and talented leaders choosing not to remain in these positions.

The conversation extended beyond race to explore other important leadership issues, including sexism, ageism, inclusion, equity, and the responsibility we all have to create environments where diverse leaders can thrive.

It was an honest, thought-provoking, and inspiring discussion that reminded me that meaningful leadership is not simply about holding a position—it’s about creating opportunities for others and challenging systems that limit potential.

The day ended on a high with a wonderful dinner, catching up with colleagues and making new connections across the BABCP community.

A fantastic day of learning, reflection, and fellowship.

Now… if only England had won! āš½ļø

On this platform, we have many women in the SpeakBlackMan community who reach out asking how they can support the men in their lives who they believe may be carrying unresolved trauma.

Here’s something to consider.

Sometimes, a man may not be loving you in the way you need or deserve, not because he doesn’t care, but because he’s loving from a place of pain. Unhealed wounds can make it difficult to express affection, trust, vulnerability, or emotional connection.

Before judging his heart, try to understand his wounds.

Compassion can open conversations that criticism never will. Encourage him to seek the support he needs, whether through therapy, mentoring, trusted community, or other healthy avenues for healing.

At the same time, remember that understanding someone’s pain does not mean ignoring your own. You are not responsible for fixing or rescuing anyone. Lasting change only happens when the person is willing to take responsibility for their own healing.

Healthy relationships are built on both grace and accountability—one partner offering compassion, and the other choosing growth.

Let’s create spaces where men feel safe enough to heal, and where women feel valued enough to be loved well.
