Keynotes, Executive Coach, & author of "Twist the Familiar" | Driving ROI via Leadership, Sales, Teamwork, Change, & Sustained Service Performance

POSTS STORIES REELS

All great executive retreats should include a "work hard-play hard" element to them. You've got to get out of the meeting room, have some laughs, blow off some steam, and enjoy a little friendly competition and exercise in the fresh air and sunshine. We did just that last week as I led a customized 2-day leadership summit for the Internal Operations execs of @virbac_us (one of the world's leading veterinary pharma companies) at the Lake of the Ozarks. We broke into teams for a putting contest on The Cove golf course and then boated across the lake to a lakeside restaurant. Fun times with a great group of folks!

What a terrific several days this past week leading a curated Virbac Corp Leadership Summit at Lake of the Ozarks. They asked me to theme the program around particular topics from my book, “Twist the Familiar”, customizing them to their key goals. What a great group of execs to work with! #twistthefamiliar #virbac #leadershipcoach by @speakercoach_gary

What a supercharged and productive homecoming meeting agenda yesterday and today of The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University alumni board members on a beautiful day at Michigan State University Eli Broad College of Business

Many of us return to campus each fall to help the students and faculty, plus work on fundraising, marketing, alumni reach-outs, mentoring of students, etc., throughout the year, too.

We share the volunteer spirit and get quite a number of beneficial business initiatives accomplished together. It’s a great group of colleagues.

Go Spartans!

Oh, the webs we weave!

I applied my strings exercise during our leadership coaching workshop last week for the team at @wente Family Vineyards in Livermore, CA.

The idea is to drive home the importance and volume of communication it takes to run a multi-faceted organization and take great care of its guests.

The exercise consists of a visual and interactive way to illustrate how many connections each team/business unit has with others in the organization each day/week, etc.

Each manager tied a colored string from their team's "home bottle" to all other bottles in the room representing other teams they interact with, all the while navigating around the growing web. The end result is a colorful and busy representation of connections.

We then discussed what we had with the web: the frequency, quality, accuracy, and effectiveness of such communication and the importance of interconnectivity between everyone, how fragile that can sometimes be, and what happens when a string between two units is cut?

Thanks to VP @bmfwino Brendan Finley and the Wente leadership team for embracing the exercise and having fun with it - including getting a bit entangled in all the connections coming together.

And I'm happy to report that no Wente wine bottles were injured in the roll-out of this exercise! 😊

Wrapped a fun podcast last week with Tyler Davidson of @meetingstoday that also included fellow alums of @msuschoolofhb (School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University) -- #Madison(Skornicka)Cloran and #Sydney Morrison -- as Tyler delved into the topic of our school's 100th anniversary campaign celebration (1927-2027).

We also discussed the impact that our degrees have had on our careers, the strong learning foundation that The School afforded us, and shared helpful tips for today's students and young professionals for interviewing and landing a good job post-graduation.

Thanks to Tyler and Meetings Today for showing a keen interest in how @michiganstateu is staying relevant to the changes in business today and preparing "the next wave."

Hats off to Madison and Sydney, too - great job on the podcast, sharing your insights and personal journeys with listeners.

We had a lot of fun on this podcast discussion. You can catch the show on the link below.

It's getting close!

I am very excited and extremely honored to be one of the keynoters at the October 12-15 @historichotels Annual Conference in one of my favorite places, @colonialwmsburg @colonial_williamsburg

Not only is it a beautiful time of year there, but it's a very appropriate place to be during our country's 250th celebration year and the Williamsburg 100th.

If you're attending, I'll look forward to seeing you at my two sessions. Both are leadership-focused with tangible, valuable takeaways that you will be able to put into motion from the get-go and "twist the familiar" for your teams and guests.

Tying together lessons from history with today's hospitality is something I truly love to do, so when @horwitzwolf reached out to me, he didn't have to ask twice.

See you in 2 weeks!

The #1 Voice of Hospitality! #1 Hospitality Podcast (No Vacancy), Top Most Inspirational People in Global Hospitality, Event Speaker/Emcee,

The minute you get too comfortable, somebody else passes you.

Gary Hernbroth, author of Twist the Familiar, joins me on No Vacancy News, Podcasts and Videos to talk about questioning how we work, how we lead and how we build relationships.

His point is simple: confidence moves you forward, but comfort turns into complacency fast. That applies to careers, #HotelLeadership, sales and pretty much every part of #Hospitality.

We also get into failure and why people who fall down, learn and adjust often bring more value than people pretending they never screw up.

Watch this one to challenge a few habits, rethink how you approach people and keep yourself from getting too comfortable.

Hats off to @visittrivalley for a terrific annual luncheon program today at Livermore’s Bankhead Theater. Pres-CEO Tracy Farhad & team presented from the stage, mixing their business report with a nice yoga interlude - a fun twist! Yesterday's "Author Palooza" event hosted by @rakestrawbooks in Danville (CA) was a lot of fun for us authors and also the patrons who filled the bookstore - standing room only!

I am honored to have been included among other local authors to give a short talk about our books, chat and answer questions with patrons, and sign books.

Part of the fun for me was hearing about the other authors' journeys and inspirations for writing their books and the adventures of bringing their stories to life. We all took very different paths.

Please support your neighborhood bookstores - there is something there for everyone.

My book "Twist the Familiar" is available wherever books can be ordered and also as an e-book.

The folks at @wente Family Vineyards really know how to entertain their guests and wine club members, as evidenced at yesterday's September Wine Club Celebration at their @murrietaswell property in Livermore (CA).

The beautiful weather was the perfect backdrop to wonderful wines, creative food pairings, and superb, friendly hospitality by VP @bmfwino Brendan Finley and the team at Wente.

Check out their website for what they offer, including wine tasting, events, golf, outdoor concerts, food, and of course a lively Wine Club program, where they are constantly offering new "twists" of the familiar!

If you're in the Mt. Diablo area this Sunday, love books, and also want to find out the buzz behind my "Twist the Familiar" and also books by fellow local authors, come by Rakestraw Books in Danville and say hi. I'll be joining other authors in an "Author-Palooza" event. We'll be chatting about - and signing - our books.

Actress/entertainer Zendaya was in that very same bookstore a couple of months back to buy a few books, so you never know who you might meet in a bookstore!
