Pravin Varughese, a 19-year-old sophomore, wasn’t planning on going to a party that his friends were heading to – it was mid week, not the weekend – and he had a test the next morning. But his friends persuaded him to come along.

That party would be the last time anyone would see Pravin alive.

Our new season tells Pravin’s heartbreaking story and the unbelievable abuse of the justice system by the very people who are supposed to uphold the law.

Carbondale, where Pravin moved for college, is a small city in southern Illinois, roughly 14 miles east of the Mississippi river, with a population of approximately 27,000 people.

Neighborhood Scout, a crime analytics site, reported this about Carbondale, “With a crime rate of 46 per one thousand residents, Carbondale has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes – from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 22.”
