Persistence pays off...

There’s nothing particularly easy about hunting albacore tuna... especially up here off Vancouver Island...

It takes planning. Weather windows. Long runs offshore. Searching a whole lot of blue water. Getting skunked. Trying again. Getting skunked again... and again... and again... and sometimes spending far more time looking for tuna than actually seeing them.

Then, when everything finally does line up, you still have to get in the water, put yourself in the right place, stay calm when the fish show up and make the shot count on these fast little football fish...

After putting in the time and working through all the trials and tribulations that come with chasing these fish, Mick finally got his opportunity—and connected. 🎯🐟

Successfully hunting an albacore while spearfishing in Canada is a pretty special accomplishment, and one that was definitely earned with a stellar group of dedicated watermen that put in the time.

That's one of the things we love about spearfishing: the successful days are made that much sweeter by all the unsuccessful ones that came before them.

Sometimes you find the fish...

Sometimes you get humbled...

And sometimes... everything finally comes together. 🤙

A big and long overdue social media congrats to @micksheinberg ! What a fish to nail and one hell of a Canadian spearfishing memory. 🇨🇦🌊🐟

Lights out...

It always blows my mind where you'll end up finding some big ling lurking about... We had dove this spot multiple times before but never did we expect to find a fish of this class in 8m or so of water.

Its head was just slightly poking out of the kelp laying flat on the bottom all I could make out was the snout and one eye which had me thinking for sure it was just a big Cabezon... With a better look and a quick turn and shot we scored this beautiful fish for an unforgettable feast on the beach with an incredible crew at @nimmobayresort.

@jeremykoreski was even tandem on the drop this fish was taken on and got to witness the release which is captured in another frame.

🍟 Our kind of Golden Arches drive-thru looks a little different and alot less golden... 🌊🤿

No cars. No lineups. No fries.

Just a swim, a little bottom time, and some fresh uni on the way through the arches of Barkley Sound. 😂

Some of our favourite days in the water have nothing to do with depth, long breath-holds, or chasing anything other than a good time. They're simply about grabbing some dive buddies, heading somewhere remote, and seeing what the coastline has waiting for us.

Exploring places that are a little harder to get to. Swimming beneath towering rock formations and through sea arches. Dropping down into beautiful cold, BC waters and sustainably harvesting a little food along the way.

There's something pretty special about being able to explore these wild places as a freediver... and even better when breakfast, lunch, dinner or simply a light snack comes straight from the ocean beneath you.

Beautiful places. Good friends. Fresh uni.

We'll take this drive-thru any day over those other fishy smelling ones that are more well known...

Epic day on Friday trialling snorkelling as a method of invasive European green crab removal with @bottomdwellersfreediving!

We hit the water at Billings Spit in Sooke, exploring the shallows before forming a 7 person line sweep along shore, successfully collecting and removing a total of 84 green crabs (35 females, 49 males). Grateful to have Christine Spice from @fisheriesoceanscan involved as well, providing some expert green crab knowledge and the biggest haul of crabs for the day!

So excited to further this collaboration and explore how this method can be used to aid in green crab removal efforts on our coast, all while fostering a sweet community of folks passionate about exploring the ocean and protecting it at the same time! With so many avid divers and snorkellers around, why not team up that passion with a bit of training in invasive crab ID and removal? 🦀💪🤿

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. We took the time today to go through the catalogue of amazing photo and video memories that we have from the last handful of years working with the @youthwarriornation to reflect on the amazing and beautiful journey it has been.

We've shared in the hunt, the harvest and in the stories and song around the fire and the table. We've moved rocks for clam garden walls, speared fish and dove for Tutsup (urchin) for our own enjoyment but also for community food. We've seen confidence and pride bloom through the hardships of life and the challenges put in front of us in, on and out of the water.

Each year, each visit, we learn and grow more ourselves with those that have been kind enough to welcome us like family into their communities and circles. We've been lucky enough to explore territorial lands and waters with the warrior youth throughout multiple different Nuu-chah-nulth nations over this time.

The power of community, the virtue of respect and the pride of one's culture has taught me so much through each community we've been to visit over the last 5 years.

Take some time today to celebrate our Indigenous People's by learning or sharing with someone about the history and culture of the Indigenous people's of the territories with-in which you (we) live or visit.

Hunting lingcod on the inside waters on lingcod and rockfish opening day with @spearfishingcanada @bottomdwellersfreediving @eades__brad @joshuatmarek @somervillecameron .

Listen along as I talk you through a couple of drops from our first day hunting the inside waters this season.

Fun drops… Mixed visibility… Great class of fish… and to top it all off a thorough and friendly check over from DFO which we passed with flying colours after they watched us shoot these fish right in front of them. Good times bonding with DFO…

DFO Op. - “That’s the biggest lingcod we’ve seen today…”

Me - “Well how about this season?”

DFO - “well it’s been kinda slow this season… wait it just opened today”

Me - “ya that’s what I was getting at! Biggest lingcod this season” 😂

While diving off the coast of Tofino with @chartertofino, we came across the remains of a remarkable Onykia robusta squid. One of our crew @whitneylewissmith just couldn’t resist conducting a quick dissection, revealing an incredible find—an enormous, perfectly preserved eyeball. @jeremykoreski managed to capture the moment on camera, and the result is breathtaking.

For those unfamiliar with Onykia robusta, these deep-sea creatures can reach over 6 feet in length. They belong to a group of “hooked squids,” named for the tiny hooks on their arms that help them grab prey. Their massive eyes, some of the largest in the animal kingdom, allow them to navigate the dark depths of the ocean, where sunlight doesn’t reach. Onykia robusta can dive to depths of over 1,000 meters, and they play an important role in the marine ecosystem as both predator and prey. Who knows what took down this particular squid, Sperm Whale, offshore orca, shark, or any number of smaller whales that frequent this pelagic zone.

Stay tuned for Jeremy’s stunning capture of this otherworldly eye, hopefully it’ll hit the walls of his gallery in Tofino. @jeremykoreskigallery taken in Tofino, British Columbia by @spearfishingcanada
