Whelp, I made a half hearted attempt last year and as of now I guess you can just call me Japhy Ryder. Sorry to all that I’ve said that I would take the trail with at the beginning of this season that I haven’t had the pleasure to yet, but this one I needed to go alone. I’ve dreamt about this route since reading it in The Dharma Bums in high school. I hadn’t realized it upon the first time visiting all these years ago now that this was the same range as chronicled by Jack Kerouac about his adventures with Gary Snyder in the eastern sierras. I remember having the realization that Japhy Ryder was Gary Snyder only after meeting him at the Nevada Museum of Art during undergrad during a book signing and reading of his poetry. I love how 68 years later landmarks described in these pages are still there just as told in the book. I didn’t exactly run and bound down the mountain, but coming down was certainly faster than going up.

As always you carry only what you take with you, if all goes as planned the mountain has a way of giving you the permission to put things down. Whatever doesn’t serve you doesn’t have to come back with you or at very least after a good hike you are able to carry them more comfortably and with more dignity. These peaks of earth and granite hold up more than just their weight, they give us the opportunity to bear witness to something greater than ourselves. Something that nature always promises is connection, connection not just to the beautiful world around us, but connection with ourselves.
