Dogs primarily construct their world through scent. Their sense of smell is tens of thousands of times more developed than that of humans. Because of this, even a simple walk becomes a detailed narrative of invisible traces: who passed by, when, and even what state of mind they were in.

To understand a dog’s perceptual world is not to imagine a heightened version of human senses. It requires accepting a completely different sensory hierarchy. In short, dogs inhabit a parallel world—one that flows right alongside our own, yet remains entirely distinct.

---

This is, in many ways, a story that spans generations. There has always been a road in our fortune. Mine, my brother’s, my parents’, and my grandparents’. Yugoslavia, Turkey, Germany, Istanbul, Thessaloniki, Bursa, Frankfurt, Kaş. If I wasn’t moving from one city to another, I was moving from one home to the next; in Istanbul alone, I have moved fourteen times. Whether it is a blessing, fate, the curse of migration, madness, or the good fortune of a wandering singer, I cannot quite tell. Most likely, it is all of them.

Can the wanderer and the onlooker ever be the same?
In old Turkish movies, the ones on stage are always “yollu”; was it more acceptable to be without a path, inert, know one’s manners and meet society’s expectations? It sure was more comfortable.

But if you don’t mind, it’s boring as hell...

*“Yollu” is a pejorative word meaning “loose woman” that derives from “yol” (road, path, way in Turkish).

Beyaz Olsaydı
Görünür spektrumdaki tüm dalga boylarının birleşiminden oluşan akromatik bir renktir. Beyaz ışık; kırmızı, yeşil ve mavi ışığın uygun oranlarda birleşmesiyle elde edilebilir.

Geçmişte beyazın ışığın doğal rengi olduğu düşünülüyordu; ancak Newton, prizma deneyleriyle beyaz ışığın tüm renklerin birleşiminden oluştuğunu ispatladı.

Had It Been White
It is an achromatic color formed by the combination of all wavelengths in the visible spectrum. White light can be produced by mixing red, green, and blue light in appropriate proportions.

In the past, white was thought to be the natural color of light; however, Newton demonstrated through prism experiments that white light is composed of a combination of all colors.

---

We chose to step away from the clichés of mining photography. Those with a keen eye for lighting will immediately notice the use of a "bulb ring light" a tool synonymous with the superficial world of makeup tutorials, yet here utilized as a deliberate point of contrast.

Our goal was to capture the miners at the mouth of the shaft, moments before they met the daylight. We wanted the physical depth of the mine to be mirrored in the deep lines etched upon their faces.

The coal dust settled into their pores and the inner lining of their lips is merely the visible trace of what has already reached their lungs. These frames were shot to evoke what lies beneath the surface.

"This work is dedicated to miner Ayhan Badurlu, whose passing we learned of just twenty minutes before arriving in Zonguldak."
