UNO Art History/Studio Art
The way of victory: never forget you are BORN to WIN!

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This was made last friday at Undercurrents at the Dock. We had a live poet, a live musician, and a live artist (me!). It was drawn without photographic reference; instead, i used a mirror in the corner of the room to capture all of the details. The entire piece had ~3 hours of work in it, with breaks between for coffee and button making. by @spencedraws

These figures were drawn live from models- they were done in charcoal, ink, and collage respectively. Learning a lot about the figure, mass, and shadows. #lifedrawing #drawing #handdrawn by @spencedraws

Some favorite life drawings as of late. The first one is done with a paper collage and pastels, the middle is vine charcoal, and the last is black ink. by @spencedraws

“Inheritance” 2024
oil on canvas board

This fabergé egg belonged to my grandmother Ann. Growing up, she lived just down the street from me, so I would visit her all the time. She never moved, it was the same house my father grew up in. The entirety of her property was covered in a lush garden that she planted herself. I haven’t seen a better garden since. She and I were very close. I remember she had tons of glass display cases for eggs and knick knacks, as well as a jungle of houseplants and a fluffy gray cat named Rico.

She was an only child, and her parents were wealthy for the time. I have seen photos of her from when she was little and got to explore the inside of the Great Pyramid of Giza. When she inherited their wealth, she over time spent most of it on objects like this one. She also had other poor spending habits that progressively got worse in a puzzlingly self destructive manner. She eventually had to move in with us and sell the house. We did not know it, but she was struggling with MS, and it had started taking a toll on her decision making and memory.

I was 11 when she passed away, and a new family moved into her house and mowed down her enormous garden. We inherited all of her belongings and until the time I was about 18, her overabundance of antique furniture and knick knacks were piled to the ceiling in the basement. That summer my sister and I went through all of it, got rid of some things, and turned the basement into a workspace.

I think about her sometimes. I have all of her old records, she was a huge fan of Peter, Paul and Mary. I spend a lot of time around her old furniture, some of it I have seen in photos of her and my dad when he was little. All of it holds a bit of memory in a strange way. I wish I could speak to her now, I think we would get along very well. by @spencedraws
