🧠🧠LIFE UPDATE🧠🧠

Glo’s pretty private with this kind of stuff, but she gave me the okay to share. She’s been dealing with trigeminal neuralgia over the past many years. You can google it if you’re interested, but in a nutshell, it’s nerve pain that causes intense shooting pain IN YOUR FACE. So much so, that for large periods of time it would cause debilitating pain just to talk, eat, have wind blow on your cheek, and essentially exist. Meds would help for awhile, then they wouldn’t. Then they’d try something new, and the cycle would repeat. But it was so bad at times that I learned the alphabet in ASL and we’d communicate that way, or via text, while sitting next to each other. She hasn’t been able to work for over 3 years and has had to rearrange her life in countless other ways to manage the pain. Just has had a real rough go. There would be weeks or even months at a time where the pain would be manageable. And weeks and months where it wouldn’t be. Before medication for trigeminal neuralgia existed, people would call this the suicide disease, because it can be so unbearable that people would, well, you get the picture.

We’ve been doing our best, but I’m so incredibly proud of how brave and strong she’s been through the ups and downs of this.

The last few months had gotten so bad that she wasn’t eating for days at a time. The pain was so immense that she needed to do something more drastic. And her Doctors suggested brain surgery, which Glo got about 3 weeks ago.

AND YOU GUYS…IT WORKED!!! She’s currently taking it easy as she continues to recuperate post surgery, and there have been a few post surgery scares and complications, but as of now THE FACE PAIN IS GONE!! Glo’s eating and talking pain free and essentially has her life back. And I’m so immensely proud of her!!!

There’s always a possibility that the pain could return at some point in time, or some other complication could arise, but things are looking pretty great at the moment and I couldn’t be happier!!

So that’s our life update. I haven’t been making too many comics recently. This is a big reason why haha. Other much more important priorities ❤️ by @spenceglenn

A little late to this, but Spooky Season never ends for this soul. Had about the best Halloween season one could’ve asked for and feel very fortunate. Salem Massachusetts, Universal Halloween Horror Nights, Disneyland and my first ever 5k, haunted forests and mystery dinners with family, hangs with friends. Glo is ready to move on and for me to put the decorations away. We’ll see… by @spenceglenn

I have no intention of following through and doing this every day. I’ve learned after many attempts that I unfortunately don’t have the time nor the energy. But I still hope to do a couple here and there when I’m in the mood! Here’s my spooky intro to Spooky season! 🧛🏻💨🦇 #mabsdrawlloweenclub #mabs #inktober by @spenceglenn

Post surgery update: It’s been (almost) a week. The doctors said surgery went well! I obviously have no recollection of any of it. So crazy that someone is wheeling me in to the operating room and talking to me, and then all of the sudden I’m out cold with no memory of anything until 4 hours later. I didn’t even make it to the operating room haha.

Anyway, I was told that it went really well and everything was smooth. I’ve been drugged up so at first it’s hard to tell if things worked, but I can say that there definitely has been some immediate pain relief of the actual sciatic nerve, which is fantastic! I’ve walked over a mile each of the last 4 days with little to no pain, which is something I’ve not been able to do in the past year. So pretty awesome. It’s not all perfect though. Yesterday did hurt when I went on my walk. I think all and all, the nerve is still healing (it’s been pinched and bugged for over a year now), and it is entirely normal for some weird pains and numbness/tingling. So I’m being patient. But overall super happy and hopeful!

Now, it’s just about letting it heal (no lifting, twisting or bending for the next 6 weeks +), walking a lot, and being patient with the healing process. ☺️ by @spenceglenn

Surgery day today!!! 🔪🔪🔪🩸🩸🩸

A year ago I was playing basketball 🏀 and crossed a guy over so hard, that I got around him and left him in the dust. He was trying to recover defensively so was chasing me, but instead of driving to the basket, I abruptly stopped on a dime and pulled up for a jump shot. Cool move, but this led the defender running full speed and straight into my back as I was in the air. The result of the blow was a herniated disc which had led to a very painful sciatica over the past year.

The details in the basketball story were not necessary, other than to make me look cool. I could have just said I got hurt playing basketball. But that wouldn’t have made me look as cool.

Anyway, the last year has been a struggle and the sciatica has progressively gotten worse. To the point of often using a cane as my foot goes numb and balance gets a little trickier. But mostly in the amount of pain suffered. If you know, you know. The pain level hits ppl differently. For me, it didn’t hurt at all really to sit or lay down. So I’m super grateful for that. The pain comes when I stand for more than a couple minutes (lots of ppl have probably seen me just drop into a squat in the middle of conversations, as sitting or squatting would relieve the pain), or walk more than a couple hundred feet (depends on the day, but definitely less than a quarter of a block). Running, basketball, anything more than that has been out of the question.

So a lot of pain, use of a cane, and I’ve gained about 30 lbs. BUT at the risk of sounding corny, I’ve tried my hardest to not stop living my life. No canceling travel plans or adventures. Just a lot of modifications.

Anyway, amazing doctors, therapists, nurses have helped A TON and today is finally the day for my long awaited surgery! It’s non invasive, should have a quick recovery time that hopefully relieves my pain somewhat immediately, and should be a breeze. But it’s still surgery. Wish me luck!

PS: part of the biggest frustration of the past year has been the first hand frustration with our health care system and specifically health insurance. That’s a story for another day though. Just good vibes today! by @spenceglenn

🌞 I know we have another month of summer and I don’t want to jinx it, but with a long awaited back surgery next week, it kind of feels like my summer’s winding down. So here are some highlights of this past summer for me. Despite limping around with sciatica and back pain, I’ve managed to have a pretty great few months thanks to family, friends, travel, outdoors, music, and this white shirt I got in Greece that I apparently wear a lot. 🌞

🌊Also, my favorite summer activity is swimming in the lake, putting out a hammock, and reading graphic novels. So that’s where the comic comes in. Damn underwater lake plants. 🌊 by @spenceglenn
