Comics Came to My Rescue

I’ve been in a reading slump for over two months now. The book that sent me into this reading slump was All for the Game. After finishing it, I was so obsessed with it that I couldn’t immediately find anything else I enjoyed quite as much.

Sure, I read another M/M mafia romance, but it was much lighter.

In the end, I found my way out through comics. I started rereading the W.I.T.C.H. comics, got into manga, and I’m also reading an illustrated South Korean novel. And somehow, all of this is slowly bringing me back to reading.

The manga you see in this photo and the South Korean novel in my previous photo were both recommended to me by a friend who talked about them with so much enthusiasm.

And apparently, her enthusiasm is working: these books are finally getting me out of my reading slump. 🥹📚

Last purchase from @worldofbooksofficial 🙂‍↕️
It’s the first time I buy from them and with the new EU’s custom duty it wasn’t an easy choice - I wanted to buy more, but I’m equally happy with what I got.
Some of the books I most love and own at home are the botanical ones, those with illustrated plates and lots to learn.
The Flower Fairies are among those ones. I have two of them already, and it was time to add to my collection 🌸

And then, on Vinted, I came across this edition of Brambly Hedge and I fell in love. Tho, on Vinted they are crazy expensive, so #wob “came” to the rescue 😂🫶🏽

Another DNF… 😭

Is there something wrong with me? After reading Heated Rivalry and All for the Game, is there anything that can actually reach that level? I honestly don’t know.

I really tried with this one. I had seen so many amazing reviews and I went in with high expectations, but it just didn’t work for me.

The writing style was way too descriptive and detailed. At some point, I couldn’t take one more sentence about how the boy’s footsteps echoed on the floor while he was running. I know some readers love this kind of atmospheric writing, but for me, it became exhausting.

So… DNF.

I’m not sure if I need to take a break from this genre and try something completely different, or if I should give it another chance someday.

This is also not the first time recently: I DNFd Unhinged by Onley James too because the english felt strange and, for me, the story was missing substance.

Maybe it’s not the books. Maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m still looking for the next book that gives me the same feeling as my favourites. ✨

This bookcase is a constant work in progress.

Earlier this year I started doubling the usable space on each shelf by creating simple risers. I first used egg cartons, but they left gaps and weren’t very practical. Then I realized that empty tissue boxes were the perfect solution: sturdy, all the same height, and just the right size (shown in the second picture).

Now the books at the back stay visible above the ones in front, so I can store more books without hiding them. As I finish more tissue boxes, I keep expanding the system shelf by shelf.

So far I’ve reorganized my most nostalgic sections: manga, childhood and pre-teen books, as well as my English-language fiction shelves (not pictured here). The larger sections, as world fiction translated in italian, special editions, romantasy, fantasy and romance, will have to wait for a few more empty tissue boxes 🤧🤣

It’s a small change, but it has given my overflowing library a surprising amount of extra space. 📚✨

Yesterday I made my pre-teen self happy.

My husband and I were both feeling a bit low, it was raining, and we wanted to get out of the house, so we went to the shopping mall. I bought something I actually needed and had already planned to buy, and then I made the mistake of going into both a bookstore and a second-hand shop.

So I made what you could call a slightly reckless shopping decision: in the bookstore @giuntieditore there’s often a display with books discounted by 50% or 70%, available only to people with the loyalty card. That’s where I bought the first two books 😌

Then I went into the second-hand shop and headed straight for the children’s and YA section, because those books are a huge passion of mine. Over the years I’ve slowly been building a collection of the books that were part of my childhood and teenage years. So, I made another “mistake” and ended up buying 14 books 😁

Thanks to the second-hand shop I spent only 25€ for all 14 books, and at the bookstore I spent 15€ for the other two, so honestly it turned out to be a really satisfying afternoon.

I came home with what I needed, plus a lot of really interesting books to look through and, for the most part, add to my collection and my personal library, and I felt happy to have nourished my inner pre-teen once again, the one who lights up every time she sees her own library, the one she didn’t have when she was ten years old.

Today I wrote to a friend: „I wish I didn’t have to go to work and could stay home all day reading.“

Lately I’ve been struggling to stay focused on reading. I start a book, and a week later I start another one. Right now I’ve got four books on the go, and I’ve even dropped the audiobook. They all convince me and at the same time… they don’t. Maybe it’s the season? Maybe it’s the heat coming in, along with the tiredness? Maybe it’s the stress from the job?

I started ALCHEMISED: strong beginning, lots of notes to take so I don’t lose track of things, definitely hyped for the High Reeve.

Then I started ALL IN THE GAME (the trilogy), because at the end of the day I’m a mood reader. I saw it on TikTok, it intrigued me, so I picked it up. I’m reading it in Italian because I heard it’s not written that well in the original language. I’m enjoying the translation, and also the character introductions — total train wrecks, all of them 🤣

And slowly, I’m reading @jenniferandbooks ’ book too; even though it’s only 130 pages, it takes time and focus because every page brings up a reflection on my relationship with anxiety, and I often find answers — here too, I’m taking notes 😌

I hope to get out of this grey reading phase soon.

I wanted this for YEARS, and after searching and waiting for a good price, these comic books from my childhood are finally in my hands.
I loooove the illustrations and the editions ☘️✨
Starting reading them soon ♥️
