Ronja Jóhannsdóttir (@ronja________._) played Björk's Echolalia festival as the sky darkened towards solar eclipse totality on 12 August, sharing the bill with Arca and her friends from Spider Network. "The concert was just unreal, it all felt like a dream sequence," she remembers. There was no brief from Björk: "She just got us the slot, the idea was just go crazy, do your thing."

Ronja has been going crazy with extreme electro-noise since she was 14, releasing 000000 with the @post.dreifing collective and then 2023's abyss0p3lagic. Now she's working on what she calls, air-quoting, "my pop album", built on random modulators and Auto-Tune play. "You often get some really cool things out of procedural things, using complex modulator chains."

Behind her sits @spider._network, the Reykjavík collective that's part label, part events crew, part archive. Co-founder Yulia Vasileva (@vasilievayulia) explains the name: "We have friends who lived here. They would go abroad and we felt it's like a spider web, spreading all over the world." Ronja works alone in her bedroom, then brings it to the group. "She sends me a link and then I listen, I'm like, 'ahhh,' and then maybe I add something," Vasileva says. "You know me better than me," Ronja agrees.
Venue closures and noise complaints are routine now in the Icelandic capital. At 2025's FALCONFEST, a complaint forced the outdoor stage indoors mid-setup. "We're like, 'You know what? Fuck it,'" says co-founder Jökull Máni Reynisson. "We turned the bad situation into a good one." Member Yuki Mik (@yuki.mik._) wants defiance: "make more noise, be louder, more experimental, take our space." Vasileva is deliberate about who gets that space: "We try to keep the ratio of women artists equal or greater to that of male artists," she explains. "Just not cis male white dudes playing boring noise."

Whatever fame brings, Ronja keeps returning to the same room. "If I get attention, I love attention... I will always love attention," she says. "But if I keep doing this until I die, playing with friends, doing these little DIY shows, I die happy."

Thank you all for last weekend’s falcon-fest. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to No Borders, the volunteers, artists, audience and venue that made this all possible. ❤️🕷️

We would, however, like to make a statement on something that occurred on Saturday, please read the whole statement in the posted images.

As many are aware, there has been a wave of DIY-venues shutting their doors because of frivolous-seeming noise complaints from neighbors. Currently there is but one DIY venue left in the entirety of the city, and less than a handful of bar-venues left. This situation could not serve as a better crystallization of the whole conflict.

To the Icelandic government, we first and foremost demand that you immediately stop all deportations and call upon the international community to dismantle the apartheid, genocidal state of Israel, with military force if necessary.

After that – we demand a complete re-examination of noise-complaint laws with significant concessions for venues and 101-area. Furthermore we demand that heilbrigðiseftirlitið be investigated for corruption of procedure.

The noise will grow louder.

Ö - a composition based on a grafic score turned into MIDI signal for the biggest organ in Iceland and a light score for cello improvisation. Perfromed by Yulia Vasileva on the organ and accompanied by Yuki Mik with a cello improvisation led by the movement of light projected over the organ.
