throwing it back with one of my favorite quotes of all time: “the only way out, is through” - robert frost last weekend i was honored to share my magic as part of the GLOW circus and variety show. this was an epic undertaking for me on multiple levels… my first performance since my injury, i felt like i was emerging from a cocoon. and i couldn’t have asked to be held by a better team of artists and community. this week i am honoring the courage in me. to shine and share, with and through all of the dark, scary feelings. it feels like this summer has dealt one blow after another. i’ve learned i can take the hit, and it doesn’t need to change anything about me. i’ve learned (once again) that anger only hurts the one carrying it. and i’m remembering what’s mine… and not letting anything get in the way. thank you to everyone who made this moment possible! joan and russel: what a wonderful gift you’ve given the community! kelly and cami: gahddamn, yall are the best! been practicing my flutes a lot lately. finding so much beauty and healing in playing my memories… i begin by just exploring and feeling the scale and sounds… see if you can follow along with my story. • i left work like any other day. maybe a hint of heaviness. i remember, it was a slow, tired walk from the building along the smooth concrete path. long step, short fall. long step, short fall. long step… suddenly, a very dead but very magical flower caught my eye from the raised planter bed. (see cover photo; spoiler alert) i passed it by initially. you have enough dead flowers at home, i thought. i doubled back, one more wouldn’t hurt (foreshadowing)… i popped up on the ledge of the planter. feet dangling maybe a foot off the ground? and i reach for this flower… im reaching and reaching and it feels like it’s inching away from my grasp (a sign) until finally i grab it and give it a good tug, trying to leave the roots. well, roots and all, i sat and admired this thing for about 3 seconds before popping off the ledge right onto a short fall. just a few inches… and i watched my foot fold up into my leg… then: shock. i crumpled to the ground and held my foot in panicked prayer “no no no no”… then realizing fully: yes, this is a problem. i limped to my car, barely holding on to consciousness. and drove (somehow, mostly with my left foot) to my friend who took me to the hospital. a few hours and an x-ray later, i learn my ankle is fractured in 3 places... the next day, im transferred to shock trauma. because of my clubbed feet, i need a special surgeon. i wait. and wait. while motorcycle accidents and boating injuries are wheeled past me at all hours for two days... finally, a private room… and surgery. i don’t remember coming out of anesthesia at all. only arriving in my bed back in the room and having the first thoughts of: now what?… flute is @highspiritsflutes • scale Am deep gratitude to my pops for gifting me these beautiful instruments and sharing their native history and meaning. and to so many of you who have come over, offered help and hangs, or just reached out. thank you. and onward… by @spiltsoap
