Twenty-five years after September 11, Steffen A. Kaplan joins me as Guest Co-Host for a special episode of The Sunday #NYTReadalong. (@Sreenet is in North Carolina for the Jaipur Literature Festival.)

Steffen was working as a photo editor at The New York Times on September 11, 2001, and was at ground zero. I was living in Seattle, nearly 3,000 miles away from New York.

We experienced that day from very different places.

On Sunday, we’ll share our stories and ask you to share yours. I’ll also talk about what I saw in the weeks and months afterward, as hatred toward Muslims, Arabs, South Asians and other immigrants fueled an intense backlash.

The New York Times has published a special section marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11, including a lead article by former #NYTReadalong guest Dan Barry. The Times shared the PDF with us, and we also have gift links to several related stories.

💔❤️‍🔥🙏🏼 September 11, 2001 was a day we’ll never forget. I walked into work at Johnson & Johnson in New Jersey to see dozens of colleagues gathered around the tv near our department. People were panicking and confused. We watched the second tower get hit in front of our eyes, and cried and held each other. Our boss sent our team home. I was in a daze, and managed to reach my then-boyfriend on the phone. He was doing a moving job for a customer in Brooklyn. We got cut off from one another, so I headed home. I went to a local blood bank and waited in line to donate blood with many others. We bonded, wept, and even laughed at times. Someone ordered pizzas for us. Years later, I ended up working at the Merrill Lynch in the World Financial Center right next to the 9/11 site, and would walk by it to catch the train home. Thank you to the first responders and everyone that helped that day, including folks from our own @smcfiredept. To those we lost, rest in peace and power. To those who were harrassed and assulted due to racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia disguised as patriotism, I apologize on behalf of the hateful people who harmed you.
