We have had a few people ask recently if my dad’s memorial is just for family, so I thought I would clarify. If you knew my Dad or our family we would love to have you join us on Sunday 1pm at the Escondido Club House (the neighborhood my dad lived in). Our last day in Tanzania we dedicated a bench to my dad, Richard Philbrick or “Babu”, as he was called there. Babu spent a lot of time at @smallsteps_skatepark watching the skaters or talking with our girls. So, a bench in his honor was meant to happen. The first picture I think of when I think of my dad in Tanzania is the picture of him sitting with Violeth at the skatepark. (Picture #8 on this post) Having that picture engraved on the bench means that there will alway be a piece of Babu in spirit at the skatepark. Small Steps for Compassion was his happy spot after my mom passed and I hope he would be pleased to know how happy they are to have this bench and something to remember him by there. Yesterday we had the amazing honor of being at Small Steps for Compassion for graduation day! What a celebration!! Everyone danced down the main aisle, fun engaging presentations from different classes, awards, and great messages. The 5 hour program flew by…and then all 900+ guests stayed for lunch. The employees surprised our director with a plaque honoring him for creating a beautiful family centered work environment where they all feel valued and inspired. It is amazing to see how God is working all things for His good. I am full of thankfulness…and wishing my dad was here with us to experience this day together. Please don’t miss all our faculty and staff dancing down the main aisle! What a cool thing for our students to witness…their teachers celebrating their accomplishments by dancing!! by @spinmom

We will be gathering for a memorial in celebration of our dad, Richard Philbrick, on Sunday, October 4th at 1pm in the Escondido Club House. We hope as many friends and family that can make it will come! There will be a meal served following the memorial. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions! I am heartbroken to share that on the 27th of July my Dad passed away. I am so thankful to have had the past 5 years with him here in Florida getting to know him even better. It has been so special to have dad at pizza every Friday night, countless lunch dates, & just hanging out on his back porch together. He was able to be at both of my children’s weddings & meet Elivia’s little boy, Lucci. My dad was ready to go anywhere you invited him to go, even if it was a 27 hour flight! He was always the first (and sometimes only 🤣) person to offer to take us to the airport! He was ready to help any of us at any time. He even showed up to help when Christian & Rachel were moving, at 93! My dad had a generous and giving heart! He helped neighbors get to the grocery store every week & took some to their medical appointments. He gave to those in need & befriended everyone.
Some of my favorite memories with my dad from these past few years was writing his life memories together. Doug and I bought him a Storyworth subscription. This website would send unique questions each week, and he would share. Then I would type while he dictated how he would like it written up. It is now a printed, cherished book of my dad’s life with photos of each of the people and places he shared about! I learned so much about my dad during these afternoons of typing & laughing with him.
Having Dad come to Tanzania with me was one of the greatest joys of my life. On his first trip he pulled me aside one evening and said your Mom would have loved this…as we both hugged and cried. I got to watch him fall in love with our girls and cherish every moment with them! He loved those girls deeply…and cried when he spoke about them (shh that’s a secret). He was so excited to go with Doug & I again, for the third time, & had already been buying gifts for them! It will be a very different trip without him.💔
Growing up my dad gave/taught me a love for swimming, hiking, skiing, snorkeling, and travel. He taught me to cherish family and to be present for them! Dad LOVED with his ACTIONS and was ALWAYS ready to help & I hope I grow up to be just like him! ❤️ by @spinmom

Small Steps for Compassion is a girls home, skate park and community school in Tanzania. Doug and I have loved being a part of this for 15+ years now. My dad joined us on a trip for his 89th birthday. It was such a special time!😍, Doug, my friend Janet, my Dad and I will be traveling over the Small Steps in a few weeks. (My dad’s 3rd trip now) We are wanting to bring much needed supplies for the school. If you are able to help by purchasing an item or two we would greatly appreciate it!
