Recap from the weekend on board the Cape Town Jazz Train 🚂 🎷🎺

With live performances by some outstanding local musicians , this was really an unforgettable exhibition of South African Jazz.

Big thanks to @capetownjazztrain , can’t wait for the next Jazz train 🙌🏽

Fela Kuti was more than a musical pioneer—he was a fearless critic of Nigeria’s corrupt government and police brutality. 🇳🇬

As the inventor of Afrobeat, he called out injustice with sound and soul, playing sax, keys, and drums with unmatched energy. Despite arrests, beatings, and constant harassment, he never backed down.

His album Expensive Shit was a bold response to that same system trying to silence him. Fela turned resistance into rhythm—and the world listened 🎷🌍

From his 12th album Expensive Shit, this is “Water No Get Enemy” by Fela Kuti 💆🏽‍♂️🎶

J. Kelly and The Premiers released an iconic single in 1973 “She Calls Me Baby”, sampled by the likes of @knxwledge and @hitboy 🎶💿

This soulful love ballad is particularly rare to get your hands on, partially due to the undocumented history of the soul group.

I can’t express my joy and excitement when I was able to find this 7’’ single from a fellow collector on @discogs 🫶🏾🙌🏾

I grew up mostly listening to Hip Hop -
In all its shapes and forms, my heart always gravitated towards the underlying melodic arrangements of this music form. 🎶

As a young boy, while yearning to find the common link among all my favourite anthems, Jazz always seemed to be at the very root of it all. 🎷💿

From the hypnotising horns, syncopated drums and melodious keys - I’ll always be grateful to producers/musicians like Nujabes and J Dilla who opened a new portal of music appreciation for us. 🍃

In January 1958, John Coltrane released his 2nd LP album Blue Train. 🔵

Arguably regarded as one of the best Jazz records of all time, this album showcased Coltrane’s ability to deviate from the main beat and play his own harmonic progression variations on top of it or weave his saxophone around it.

What’s your favourite Coltrane album ? 💿🎷

WILLOW’s Empathogen, was my favourite album to come out of 2024, a year where we’ve been blessed with so much great music. 🎶💿

This project is filled with sophisticated melodic and harmonic structures, blending elements from Jazz to progressive rock, beautifully accompanied by WILLOW’s incredible vocals.

I’ve found myself revisiting this album far too many times, just to discover new sounds and intricate instrument arrangements, which only enriched my experience of the album after every listen. 🎹🎸

From complex chord progressions to beautifully crafted lyrics, this is truly a masterful work 🌱🤎
