Real photos from us to you to answer the question: does your real life make it into your books? Yes because our real life is literally sitting together making up stories while doing all of this stuff which is sapphic by default. Have we ever made it in an ambassador’s linen closet (If I Told You, I’d Have to Kiss You)? No. Starred in a detective show and then became real detectives (Big Name Fan and Love a Comeback)? No. Made out on the chunnel (The Guest Book)? Had a TikTok where we kissed strangers every week (Everyone I Kissed Since You Got Famous)? No. Started a detective agency after divorce (The Prairie Nightingale series)? Only if you count spying on the neighbors. Had a long distance relationship (yes), but it’s five months apart not miles apart (Cosmic Love at the Multiverse Hair Salon)? No. Been cursed by a seventeenth century Puritan (A Star-Cursed Heart)? As far as we know, no. But all the other sapphic stuff that gets in our books, like our hearts and feelings and hopes does. As a girl who grew up in Kansas, I grew up watching Hee Haw and The Grand Ole Opry and sitting in front of huge stereo set-ups sifting through albums by Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Emmy Lou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Carole King. It was the music and the lyrics, but it was also the long hair and embroidered blouses and rhinestones and sequins and pink guitars, too. Even though everything so far in my life had told me otherwise, these women said that feelings mattered. There was no cynicism on Hee Haw when they lowered the lights and a woman in a long dress sang something sad with her guitar. And I grew up during a time when the world made fun of Dolly Parton. When she wasn’t cool at all and she was shorthand for all things too much that boiled down to how any girl who expressed herself was too much. I never stopped listening to her and seeing her movies. When my boobs grew way too big she kept me from hating myself. I yearned for her drama and drag, but I was always too afraid to let myself defy 90s grunge and minimalism even if I had the body for it that I hid and hurt. She was, to me, the most beautiful and most feeling, her Appalachian accent was so perfect. I was serious about music, too, studied it through college, performed solo and in ensembles and orchestras with my cello, and it was good, so good, even as a part of me thought about acrylics finding bar chords on a guitar and singing sad songs. I love her and have always loved her, every album I bought on cassette and CD, and every time I’ve ever looked at clothes and wished I was more brave or found ways to emulate her with fluffy blouses. I love that loving her was a straight and well lit road to all the singer songwriters I’ve loved since, and that my love was so well-seasoned against the shade and cynicism they’ve all caught. Dolly had already showed me that we’re here to feel feelings and care. Imagine exemplifying love with your life by making it important to be who you are. Imagine wearing sequins and big hair to make sure everyone really sees how important their life is, and writing the joke before the heckler has time to tear you down. I haven’t bestseller listed with my strange and tender queer books, but I have written books that meander their way to readers, and more readers, and thanks to those readers and booksellers who pass my book hand to hand, a year later Cosmic Love softly crept into its third printing. Which is a real thing, and important, and god I’m so grateful to all of you helping me hold down my midwestern midlist fort. Writing and readers are the whole entire everything of all of this and today I was reminded with this front matter in tiny print. I’ll keep doing the writing part, for you for you for you. My follow up to Cosmic Love, A Star-Cursed Heart’s been meandering this summer, too, making its way in its own way like her big sister, so if you’re into Scarlet Letter retellings with Puritans and beautiful devils, bone dogs and trans angels, go find her 💜 by @spinster_press
