What’s going on right now is grim. There isn’t any other word for it. First and foremost, my thoughts are with the victim and his family.

That said, some of the things I’ve seen on social media over the last few days have been disgusting. The amount of people saying things like “get black people out of Ireland” honestly makes me angry.

I grew up immersed in hip hop culture as a DJ. Through that, I’ve built friendships with many black people over the years…people I genuinely care about and am proud to call muckers.

I’ve checked in with a few of them over the last couple of days. One told me that he and his wife are now afraid to leave the house with their young baby because of what they’re seeing online and hearing around them.

Think about that for a second.

The actions of one violent individual should never be used to judge an entire group of people. Please don’t paint everyone with the same brush.

I understand people are angry. They have every right to be angry about what happened. But direct that anger where it belongs. Hold politicians and government accountable for the policies and systems they put in place.

Don’t take it out on ordinary people because of the colour of their skin or where they were born.

And for those attending protests and burning the place down, I have a genuine question…

If you’re willing to take to the streets over this, why aren’t you protesting when Irish men rape or murder women? What’s the difference? Crime is crime, regardless of the nationality, race or background of the person who commits it.

Please don’t allow social media outrage and misinformation to turn neighbour against neighbour.

At times like this, I think John Hume’s words are worth remembering:

“All conflict is about difference; whether the difference is race, religion, or nationality. The answer to difference is to respect it. Difference is of the essence of humanity, and it should never be the source of hatred or conflict.”
