Six Or So Tufts is made of attempts to calm down, mostly through looking at things, both real and imagined. These poems follow the repeated process of placing relationships, objects, neuroses, myths, and ideas against a background of gold, gray, and then against the Umbrian sun, a procedure derived from Rilke’s “Notes on the Melody of Things.” What results is a quasi scientific accounting traversing the study of clouds, theology, and the desire to understand what “the core” is. "Clouds pass, bodies alight: between the two there must be another mechanism / that grinds or twists, something that turns the mind back to itself, shifts and wallows / with forgetting and then remembering." This chapbook is a partial record of the iterative mechanisms of memory, thought, and presentness, “gathering under the auspices of knowledge as light;” the various architectures of urban experience, erotics, remembering, friendship, and light and shadow all juxtaposed upon one another to create a scalar and spatial portrait; the repeating tessellated muquarnas that consitute the ceiling of the Süleymaniye Mosque. Carjackin, Mahid Rose. "logical garbage can on every sensation" Rose is a Philly city poet, perhaps in both the Schuyler sense of the phrase (as one rearranging queer subjectivity in tandem w the rapid cultural and physical rearrangement of gentrifying postwar New York City) and the Scalapino sense of the phrase (affective urbanism, concerned with the image of the city and its spiritual and emotional effects of its residents). These poems rapidly oscillate between an artistic compressing, flattening and rendering of The City of Brotherly Love and a superanimation, inflation, and saturation of those same places, with the poet's body as both the psychoactive drug that plunges the surrounds into and out of hyperreality, a tuning fork that orients them (and us) to these surrounds, and the plain and loveable flaneur. Gratitude movement, indeed: periphery station crunk below) ) / sleep in sequence a tin machine " As Davy Knittle writes on Simone White's collection On Being Dispersed, " abstraction’s violence is its disappearance of a subject position from which to refuse. The refusal of both received narration and abstraction is crucial to Black experimental writing that provides a lineage apart from the frequent white collapsing of the nonrepresentational and the avant-garde." These poems--about a city, its inhabitants, and a subject within that group--themselves constitute a city: breathing, dirty, sexual, and building information in real time. PRE-ORDER. Books start shipping in mid-October. Thank you (linque within our bio). “The wood stove pops The oil pops Electric heater The sound in the speakers Pops. Nothing sadder Than two people” Across the solitude of a state with more cattle than humans, Casper Lee’s No Ranch is alive with an appetite for contact—with friends, lovers, and the innumerable beings and organisms that share the field of perception. The poems can at first seem surreal, but I’m convinced Lee is describing what is most real: a world in which turning a donkey’s head matters to the universe, horses ask us to reconsider the terms of our approach, and intimacy with other animals opens deeper questions about care, labor, violence, estrangement, and awe. Folkloric, erotic, and radically receptive, No Ranch is a patchwork lyric that sews together and rips apart “coherence of calamity.” A ranch suggests a place with a name and a brand, inheritance, identity. It carries the mythology of the American West. Lee’s ranch is no ranch. Their poetry is no poetry. A form of anti-poetry (think Nicanor Parra), undoing the sentimentality of the West (and poetry itself) with a language inseparable from the life being lived there. Sorry folks, this is everyday speech when you’re a poet on no ranch, in some bar—and the truth is that it’s deeply funny, dirty, and weird. —Stacy Szymaszek (@cow_commons Casper Lee is a poet from Wyoming.
