Dapple unicorn for the always lovely, M! It has a long flowing mane that starts light at the root and darkens at the tips. Its tail is lion-like with a tuft a of waving tendrils at its end that also start light and darken at the tip. It’s time I did a refreshed Introduction! It’s really cool to be able to connect with so many like minded weirdos & I personally love learning more about the artists whose work I admire so I’m happy to share a bit about myself and my work! My name is Janeen (she/her), I’m an artist and tattooer & I co-own @hemlocktattoostudio with these three angels: @solaryeartattoo @elven.hands and @pasturetattoo I’m from Mohkinstis aka Calgary, AB with big roots in Newfoundland. I graduated with a BFA from Alberta University for the Arts in 2018 and I’ve been tattooing since 2019. I was 14 when I first decided I wanted to be a tattoo artist & it still feels very surreal to be doing this work. I love tattooing so much it’s impossible to truly express in words. I’m bisexual, a virgo, kinda feral & when I’m not tattooing I can be found bird watching, playing outside, riding my bike, making stuff & loving on my cat, Valentine. I love ancient art, weird women, gay stuff, unicorns, anthropology/archeology, horsies, Neanderthals, goth stuff, sci-fi/fantasy & frolicking creekside. As an artist I am drawn to medievalism, subversive Catholic iconography, fantasy, queerness, eroticism, art history, pre-history and occultism. I grew up in catholic schools which absolutely influenced the type of imagery & symbolism I find myself interested in as an adult. I particularly love exploring the archetypes of The Monstrous Feminine and The Wild Woman. Community care, social justice, mutual aid and knowledge sharing are very important to me and these shared values with the other co-owners of Hemlock have shaped a lot of how we operate our studio. And finally, it’s important everyone is aware that my most prominent personality trait is 🀑clown🀑. I am not mysterious or intimidating, just a jester fool devoted to the laughs & I LOVE connecting with and yapping with my clients!!! The tattoo depicts an intimidating transmasc medusa figure shown facing the viewer. Staring directly outward with upturned chin and piercing gaze, his head of coiling serpents cascades down into long winding helix shapes that reach past his hips. Hissing snake heads poke out here and there. His heavily muscled arms are raised in a flexing-style position with his hands pointed outward in claw positions, showing off his monstrously long claws. His upper body is bare, showing an incredibly muscular chest with top-surgery scars under his pectoral muscles. Chiseled abdominal muscles are also visible. A ghost magpie aka leucistic magpie companion for the existing magpie on the other leg of @corvidamy ! Amy is a super TURBO fan of magpies and it’s easy to tell as much when you look at their illustrations (which you absolutely should by the way)! 🀩 The ghost magpie here is very fresh and therefore a lot more pink than it will be when all the opaque grey ink heals! The classic magpie is mostly healed but the tail is fresh! Thank you SO SO much to Amy for booking with me for this very involved piece! It’s her biggest tattoo so far and it feels very special to get to have been the artist to make this idea come to life for them! πŸ’˜πŸ’˜πŸ’˜ LONG LIVE MAGPIES!!! A battle ready osprey for my effortlessly cool friend, K! Her helmet design is a combo of a classic medieval knights helm mixed with a falconry hood. 🀌🏻 Bird lovers: if you could have any bird be your falconry bird who accompanies you on hunts and into battle, what would it be? Mine would be a merlin! I love the idea of a cartoonishly tiny little bird being my battle companion. In fact, I have a Merlin with a falconry hood tattooed on my bicep! ✹The Grimoire of Mystic Beasts & How to Defend Them✹ I am so indescribably excited to share this completed project!! This is the first leg sleeve for both me AND J! ✨ The biggest and most important thing I have to emphasize is how incredible J is. The unicorn on her shin was her ❗️FIRST TATTOO❗️After getting that piece she promptly submitted a proposal for this full patchwork leg sleeve!!!! And when I tell you this woman was BUILT TO BE TATTOOED!!!! She sat through several back to back days of knee, knee ditch, back of thigh, and ankle like it was NOTHING. This was me the entire time: πŸ˜§πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘οΈπŸ‘„πŸ‘οΈπŸ—£οΈπŸ«‘πŸ₯Ή J you are an absolute tank and I am so grateful to you for trusting me to not only give you your first tattoo, but to then have me tattoo your ENTIRE leg. Thank you for your endless enthusiasm and your grace and patience with the big learning curve this was for me being my first full leg sleeve! Love letter to barn owls for the best guy around, M! She has such a LETHAL collection of tattoos from me on her legs, I am honoured and in AWE of her strength and immaculate taste!! It has black peering eyes and a round face with small pointy beak. Its wing is the darkest part of the design showing variations in texture and tone with black and white speckles throughout. I am running around on all fours with excitement to finally share this ✨DREAM✨ project with you all! I had the honour of being asked to paint an expertly made shield crafted by @blacksmithbaliko with a custom design for @modern_bird to carry into battle with her team the @calgarysilvergryphons at the @imcfederation buhurt championships in SpΓΈttrup Borg, Denmark, in August! βš”οΈβš”οΈβš”οΈ I need to SCREAM my gratitude to Michaela for her trust in me with this being my first time ever doing something like this. I had to face a truly fearsome gauntlet known as πŸ’€eΜ£ΜΏΝ‹Μ’Μ•ṇ̀͛̒̍aΜ€Μ„Μ“ΜΝ˜ḿ̬̏̀ͅeΜ£ΜΏΝ‹Μ’Μ•lΜ™Ν–Μ‘ΜΎΝ£ pΜžΜˆΝ‘ΜšΝžaΜ€Μ„Μ“ΜΝ˜iΝ”Ν–ΜœΜ‰ΝŒṇ̀͛̒̍tΜ²Μ‚Μ“Ν©Μ‘πŸ’€. The learning curve was FEIRCE and marred with intense and dangerous battles i.e. poisoning myself with paint thinner fumes because I had to paint indoors due to the endless rain outside and a TIGHT deadline. Eventually the weather improved and I started getting the hang of things. Several days (each singular layer of paint needs 24 hrs to cure πŸ₯΄) of me shrimped over this shield on my apartment balcony later, she was born!! Thank you also to the folks at @pmhobbycraft for the help and guidance with my enamel paint journey! To have somehow found myself being considered for projects like this feels completely unreal and something I legitimately could never have predicted. I have always been a turbo-nerd about medieval art (as I’m sure comes as no surprise) and I am beaming with joy to have found such a cool community of other turbo-nerds and queerdos who love this stuff too!! Thank you again to Michalea for choosing me to make this shield design happen. You are a HUGE badass, truly cool beyond comprehension & I am dazzled and honoured to have proximity to your coolness. Bogdan the Goblin for the delightful @caffeinatedminiatures who is an incredible miniature painter and one of the organizers of @dungeonfest ! Dungeon Fest hired me to do this goblin illustration for the fest this year and he is truly one of my favourite creations in recent memory! It was so fun to get to tattoo him! Long live Bogdan!!!
