Just Beyond Endless Mountain is out today on @antirecords

“…In the middle of all that I just saw it flashing across my imagination, the album that needed to be made. Not that anyone really needed another album from me, but I did. To shut out all the noise about other types of useless productivity and half assed, prompted AI lullabies that just make me sad. In the wrong way. In that flash I heard something gritty, romantic and sad in a good way. But also forgiving, loving, remembering we’re still here.”

It’s been 20 years since Kristian Matsson debuted as the Tallest Man On Earth. Today, the indie-folk singer-songwriter begins a new chapter with his third LP for ANTI-.

‘Just Beyond Endless Mountain,’ which Matsson self-produced, was inspired by his return to Dalarna in central Sweden, where he grew up. There in the countryside, he reconnected with the local folk music he’d left behind to explore the sounds of American primitivism. The result is a richer, more expansive approach shaped by traditional Swedish melodies and instrumentation. He even picked up a fiddle again.

Soon, Matsson will bring ‘Just Beyond Endless Mountain’ to North America. The Tallest Man On Earth’s tour with Gwenifer Raymond and Andrea von Kampen kicks off next week.

via @rollingstone — The Tallest Man on Earth Rediscovers His Heritage On A Cathartic New Album

@spkmatsson returned to his native Sweden to make Just Beyond Endless Mountain, a record rooted in nature: “I get more cynical, but I search for the moments you get to be in awe of how cool a tree is.”

Read the full feature for more on Mattson embracing the sounds of his Swedish heritage after years in Brooklyn and seven albums chasing American sonic traditions.

The Tallest Man on Earth shares “Overboda,” the second single from ‘Just Beyond Endless Mountain.’ A duet with the wonderful @sofiahultqvistkott

Inspired by his return to Dalarna, Matsson’s central Sweden hometown, the influence of Swedish folk music on the album is unmistakable.

“More than anything, it’s the melodies that have changed. A lot of them come from fiddle phrases. They’re so beautiful. This album wouldn’t sound the way it does if I hadn’t been listening to Swedish folk music. It rewired something inside me.” by @spkmatsson
