Adam closed the 5th edition of ADIT Arq in Florianópolis with the talk “Se a cidade é para todos”. At a seminar focused on architecture as an activator of places, people, economy and value, the title reframes the question: who that value is created for, and who gets access to it. Working between São Paulo and Oslo, SPOL looks at how each city distributes public space, mobility and housing, and where design can take part in that distribution.

Em um seminário dedicado à arquitetura como ativadora de lugares, pessoas, economia e valor, o título desloca a pergunta: para quem esse valor é produzido e quem tem acesso a ele. Entre São Paulo e Oslo, a SPOL observa como cada cidade distribui espaço público, mobilidade e moradia, e de que forma o projeto pode participar dessa distribuição.

How do you judge a building by the city it helps shape? The question lies at the core of the Somos Cidade Movement, founded by Felipe Cavalcanti to bring urban planning, architecture and the real estate market together around more human, integrated cities. Presented at COMPLAN in Balneário Camboriú, the 2026 Somos Cidade Award recognizes projects that improve the ground floor, public space and their relationship with the surroundings. SPOL founding partner Adam Kurdahl joins the jury.

A pergunta está na base do Movimento Somos Cidade, fundado por Felipe Cavalcanti para aproximar urbanismo, arquitetura e mercado imobiliário em torno de cidades mais humanas e integradas. At HIF 2026, Adam Kurdahl guided visitors through Cidade Matarazzo, where SPOL designed the cultural and commercial spaces within the heritage-listed buildings of the former Matarazzo Hospital. The visit centered on a question at the core of the project: how to bring contemporary uses into structures built for another time without erasing what makes the site legible. Building within what already exists means taking the original geometry as the starting point for design, not as a limit to work around.

No HIF 2026, Adam Kurdahl conduziu uma visita pela Cidade Matarazzo, onde a SPOL desenho os espaços culturais e comerciais nos edifícios tombados do antigo Hospital Matarazzo. O percurso girou em torno de uma questão central do projeto: como inserir usos contemporâneos em estruturas construídas para outro tempo sem apagar aquilo que torna o lugar legível. Construir a partir do que já existe significa tomar a geometria original como ponto de partida, e não como um limite a ser contornado.

For the second time, SPOL takes part in the Hunter International Forum. In 2025, at MASP, the conversation began with São Paulo 2035 and the city’s place in the Global South. In 2026, it moves from the stage to the site: Adam Kurdahl leads a visit to Cidade Matarazzo, walking participants through the design process and the challenges of intervening in a heritage site in downtown São Paulo.

FACADE AS INTERFACE

Facades are instruments of orientation, performance, and presence. In SPOL’s projects, they respond to different scales of the urban fabric, from residential towers to mixed-use buildings. In dense cities, the facade is a decisive boundary.

CURVED CONTINUITIES

Designing in curves is drawing movement, continuity, and a relationship with the surroundings.

In SPOL’s projects, curved geometry expands perspectives and creates façades that are permeable to light, biophilia, and collective use. Curves bring architecture, the city, and the landscape closer together.

CPH House // Housing

CPH House is defined by the articulation of two horizontal volumes positioned within the landscape. The upper level extends outward, creating a covered area below and establishing a direct relationship with the terrain. Large glazed openings frame long views and bring consistent light into the interior. Outdoor spaces are integrated as extensions of the living areas, reinforcing continuity between house and garden.

A Casa CPH é definida pela articulação de dois volumes horizontais inseridos na paisagem. O pavimento superior se projeta, criando áreas cobertas no térreo e estabelecendo uma relação direta com o terreno. Grandes aberturas em vidro enquadram as vistas e garantem iluminação constante no interior. Os espaços externos são incorporados como extensões das áreas internas, reforçando a continuidade entre casa e jardim.

CPH House // Housing

At the core of CPH House, the staircase organizes circulation and defines the spatial layout. A continuous black element guides movement through the house, contrasting with the wood flooring and curved white surfaces. The geometry unfolds gradually, connecting the different levels and framing views between them. Circulation becomes a central architectural component of the interior.

No centro da Casa CPH, a escada organiza a circulação e define a configuração dos espaços. Um elemento contínuo em preto conduz o percurso, em contraste com o piso de madeira e as superfícies curvas brancas. A geometria se desenvolve gradualmente, conectando os níveis e estabelecendo relações visuais entre eles. A circulação se consolida como um componente central da arquitetura interna.

CPH House // Housing

CPH House explores the balance between structure and landscape through precise volumes and generous openings. Large glass surfaces frame the surrounding vegetation, extending the interior toward the exterior and reinforcing a continuous spatial experience. The upper volume projects outward, creating a suspended viewpoint over the garden while defining sheltered spaces below. Material restraint and clarity guide a domestic environment closely tied to its context.

Hotel Santa Teresa // Hospitality, Re-use

A composition of volumes unfolds along the hillside, adapting to the existing topography and preserving the density of the vegetation. Circulation follows the terrain, connecting rooms, terraces and shared spaces through a continuous landscape. Each intervention is precise, allowing the natural environment to remain the protagonist. The project operates as an extension of the forest.

Existing structures are preserved and reinterpreted as part of a broader landscape strategy. New volumes are introduced with restraint, creating a dialogue between past and present. Green roofs, terraces and open façades extend the vegetation across all levels, dissolving boundaries between building and site. Architecture operates as continuity rather than contrast.

Hotel Santa Teresa // Hospitality, Re-use

Set within a steep, green hillside, the project is shaped by its dialogue with the landscape. Volumes are embedded into the terrain, creating layered spaces where architecture and vegetation coexist and define each other.

Each unit establishes a distinct relationship with its surroundings: garden, terrace, or distant view. More than rooms, the proposal offers spatial experiences rooted in the Brazilian landscape.

Implantado em um terreno íngreme e densamente vegetado, o projeto nasce da relação direta com a paisagem. Os volumes se inserem no relevo, criando camadas onde arquitetura e vegetação coexistem.
