“‘What can ghosts possibly do to me?’”

… or what can creepy dolls do? (Did you spot her??)

The Book Fairies have been busy sharing copies of House of Splinters by Laura Purcell across the UK today! York was the big destination and what a great way to celebrate Ghost Week, giving ghost hunters something else to spot 👻 The footage from the Minster at the end as darkness descended shows you how keen people were to find this book… 👀 Thank you to @yorkghostmerchants for helping!

Who will be lucky enough to spot one this spooky season?

About the book:

The author of chilling modern classic The Silent Companions revisits the haunted Bridge estate in this delightfully disturbing gothic treat, as Belinda Bainbridge and her family discover that their new home is anything but inviting.

Not every house is a home ...

Belinda Bainbridge has spent her life in the shadow of her anxious mother, so when her father-in-law dies at The Bridge, his remote ancestral seat, she is secretly thrilled. His death means she, her husband, Wilfred, and their children can relocate and finally begin to create their own happy home together: born a merchant’s daughter, she will now be lady of the manor.

But their new home quickly proves far from ideal. The garden is a wilderness, the estate is struggling financially, there are whispers about the mysterious death of a servant many years before, while their young son, Freddie, seems unusually fixated on the strange wooden figures-so-called “silent companions”-that were once owned by his ancestors.

When Wilfred’s charismatic brother, Nathan, arrives unexpectedly from abroad, bringing a very different account of the family’s past, Belinda begins to question what her husband has told her. What really lies behind the sad history of the house?

And are Belinda’s children truly safe here?

The clocks go back tonight, don't forget!

Which makes this the right evening to mention that Whitby has been doing gothic since 1890, when a theatre manager from Dublin spent a few days on the West Cliff and left with a name, a shipwreck and a churchyard as his inspiration.

This November we continue that gothic thread, right here where it all began:

Laura Purcell on the queens of gothic fiction. Essie Fox and Jess Kidd on Cathy Earnshaw. Lucie McKnight Hardy at nine o'clock at night in a bar. A live Wuthering Heights podcast. Folklore and the supernatural at the Pavilion. And a children's event about the things that don't wait until dark.
