On this day, one year ago, the great David Adickes passed away. He was a sculptor, painter and artist—the quintessential Houstonian known for his tall statues, from Sam Houston to the Beatles.

For him to pass away on 713 Day—better known as a city holiday celebrating everything that is iconically Houston—is very fitting for someone who gave the city so much joy through his art.

I met David only once in Oct. 2024 because I wanted to do a profile piece on him. He was only 97 at the time and I realized I needed more elements to complement his story. But time flew by and before I knew it, it was July 13, 2025–the day he passed away.

For another six months, the project was left untouched. But thanks to Tammy from @spotonpublicrelations, we finished the video project with voices from people who knew him best. If you haven’t seen it, search for David Adickes on houstonlife.tv.

There’s a reason why I’m sentimental about this post. Back in my community college days, I took a film photography class. Without getting into too many details, I chose to photograph the Sam Houston statue for a project (second last photo). Fast forward to 2024, I can’t believe I met the artist behind the iconic tall statue. He was a sweet wonderful man, who liked to make jokes.

Rest in peace, David Adickes. You left a big mark not only in Houston and across Texas, but also on people 🎨🎨 by @spotonpublicrelations

Oh, dearest David, how we cherish your countless memories made and life brightened by you in Houston, the U.S., and across the globe. 🩵🥂🎨🌄🌎🌃

On this day — proudly known in Houston as “713 Day” as a nod to our old-school, original telephone area code — we also honor the beautiful memory of David Pryor Adickes, on the one-year anniversary of his passing. 🦋

So many media and community friends to thank, but today, a tremendously special thanks is due to @sabihasahar for her beautifully written tribute and expertly produced feature on the Adickes Legacy, which again aired on Houston’s NBC affliliate @click2houston.

You can read her tribute via the link in bio or in our stories, and may visit @click2houston @houstonlifetv, and search “David Adickes” to see the wonderful segment, which features lots of friendly faces of the immediate and extended Adickes family and community, including the love of his life, Linda Wiley, gallerist, Hannah Rees, conservation lead, Kelley Devine, collector George DeMontrond, and many more!

Stay tuned with @adickesart legacy program managers via the team at @spotonpublicrelations and @spotonartsgroup to keep up with where David’s work is HEAD-ed(!)…hint: some exciting news is brewing, but select works from the presidential head special edition remain available, and our team of preparators and conservationists carefully and meticulously prep, deliver, and professionally install at your property! We may just bring a special treat or two to make your installation particularly cool 🍦and ultra-unique.

SpotOn PR + Govt Affairs and ADICKES ART loved to partner with the City of Houston to ring in the 4th of July in the 4th largest U.S. city!

TWO very cool models of our beloved David Adickes’ two, original #We❤️Houston sculpture works were on display as special anchors for the event—at Eleanor Tinsley Park and the Sam Houston Park/Futbol Zone!

These models, with express, formal approval from official Adickes Art/We❤️Houston licensor*—(that’s us, *SpotOn Public Relations)—and the Adickes Estate, were licensed for use at this event via special agreement with the City. What a cool collab — we created the ultimate “selfie stations” for 60,000 event guests: kids, adults, global and regional tourists, sports fans, patriotic picnic & parks lovers, and local H-Town residents, alike!

The original, massive concrete, steel, and pigment sculptures are currently on-loan to the City, Airport System, EDMD/EADO, and affiliated entities, for use with the FIFA host committee and Fan Zone, tourism programming, and more, but these *original We❤️Houston works are available for acquisition* and licensing, via our firm, as well. 🎨

More on that, soon enough, but do reach out if you have interest in acquisition of the original, iconic artwork — or to request information about how to apply for approval for licensing and/or use of the image or likeness of the art in your next ad campaign, event, film, or photo shoot! You’ll join the ranks of HBO, Red Bull, Formula 1, Kelsey-Seybold, and many, many more!

As for this week’s festivities, Mayor Whitmire’s special events team absolutely knocked this out of the park…and all the way to the moon. NASA surely tracked some of that sparkle. 🎆🎇🚀. Our fave SpotOn intern certainly did 📸📹.

FACT: The richest, deepest, most flavor-filled “gumbo” of international and local hearts and souls exist and converge here in Houston, and we sure do enjoy celebrating community—together.

Happy 4th—stay solid, supportive, and smart as we move forward and stand for what’s right during this nation’s 250th year. by @spotonpublicrelations

Love this @glasstire feature with Carla Bisong, President of Houston Art Gallery Association and founder of @bisongart / Bisong Art Gallery!

Visit Carla, collect her artists’ work, and feel the joy and contentment that comes with the Bisong experience.

It’s very personal, and—like she says in the story—it’s a partnership! 🎨🖼️🫶🏾🩵 by @spotonpublicrelations

Great day yesterday exploring business opportunities at the studio of the late great David Adickes! Sculptor, professor, and art conservator Kelley Divine is doing extraordinary things with restoration of the Presidents. She studied styles, materials, and techniques for years with David Adickes himself. She has developed modernized systems to restore, preserve, and protect his large format works. Her team of experts produce results that are resilient, vibrant, safe, and lasting, with special attention to the artist's aesthetics. Looking forward to working with you. Thanks to Tammy Dowe for setting it up! @spotonpublicrelations @kelleydevineart @adickesart #president #presidentialbust #americanpresident taken in Houston, Texas by @spotonpublicrelations

Spinning new tunes and dreaming of a Rabbit with a Habit — one of Vivian Wise’s works in her exhibit at Heidi Vaughan’s excellent gallery. Check in (and out) as you “walk through” Viv’s door-as-art-story, and, “Whatever you do, don’t look down.”

Here at home, we’re getting into the music, Growing Up Wise, signed by the artist, and contemplating her wonderland of work — Viv’s solo show is up through 20 June @heidivaughanfineart.

Treat yourself, experience it, and acquire both an album and a multimedia work to get your personal sampling of this complex, kind, witty, wildflowery, cotton-candy-pink Houston heart and storied soul.

SCORRRRRE!!!
Welcome back We ❤️ Houston and say hi to FIFA Fan Fest!

David loved Houston, and man does Houston love David and his work… almost as much as we do.
We’re so excited to be back in Houston for the FIFA Fan Fest, surrounded by the energy and passion of the game! The iconic Houston letters are shining bright again, just in time for the World Cup—restored, repainted, reinstalled and ready for action. Come check them out and celebrate with us!
It’s a huge endeavor to care for such large and iconic pieces, especially when you’re attached to the legacy. These letters were restored from the inside out then went through some logistical backflips to get them loaded up and back in place in time for the World Cup. Here are a few pics!

“New York City!?!” (We can almost hear David Adickes’ gentile Texas twang, à la the 1980s Pace Picante commercials…).

Thanks to Manhattan baddies from Baffler for flying in this spring to shoot the feature for the summer 2026 print edition of @thebafflermag! We think it’s hot.

Despite and perhaps thanks to the fog and rain, @andrewnormanwilson_actually & @shanelavalette captured brilliant perspectives of David’s massive presidential bust collection.

As we continue to seek proper space, and a proper collector or group of collectors to help acquire and fund the family-matched art donation-restoration (with a potentially COLOSSAL $$$$$ collector/donor tax benefit and $$$savings attached!), the debate is now on the front-burner re: whether to keep the full collection of 43 busts together, or break them into singles.

We’d love to hear your thoughts!

TXDoT is coming through and will take the land that our beloved Adickes Art studio sits upon in 2027, and the family’s active Adickes/Nance Street space will have to close—and move to a new (location: TBD), active studio location.

Instead of moving the works twice, we are working against the clock to secure:

🎨Collector-donor or collector group (Adickes family will match $ level support)

🏞️🌳Park or land space — appropriate for a “presidential promenade” (for full set of 43 busts)

💡Your innovative input, support, or ideas!

We’ve intensively worked for the past two+ years with elected officials, private collectors, & foundations—on potential site selection & acquisition opportunities w/multiple qualified parties, & manyyyyy single, large sculpture works and grouped works have been acquired & placed—with honor, expertise, & gratefulness! Thank you, collector community (you can see many of them on our insta pages!).

Now, however, we turn to the community as we gather intel and ideas related to next steps for the busts.

A demonstration project renovation of a special selection of several bust works starts this month, and WOW, will you see a gorgeous final reveal!

Exciting, a little intense, and always very cool.

@adickesart wants YOU! And your ideas.

Let’s place these, Texas!

Thanks, y’all! by @spotonpublicrelations

Everyone deserves to enjoy a pleasant, peaceful, productive quality of life and quality of place, and public art is an essential part of this equation.

Art influences outcomes. David Adickes believed this in his soul and practiced it in his acts.

He also loved to see other artists in the region share art with the community.

It was an honor to accompany @adickesart public sculpture painting partner team lead, Sebastien Boileau, at the unveiling of his two, massive murals at the @newhopehousinghouston community in @hcpct2commissioner @adriangarciahtx‘s precinct!

Special thanks to Commissioner Garcia and Texas Senator and Art of Leadership alum-honoree, @carolfortexas, along with countless others from Harris County, City of Houston, State of Texas, and the philanthropic community, as well, for your contributions to these outcomes!

Adickes Art & the Adickes Estate Legacy Program managers, SpotOn Public Relations & Government Affairs + SpotOn Arts Group, partner with the best-in-class of Houston talent on our public art programming.

Last week, you may have seen our deeper dive re: the work of conservator-sculptor, Kelley Devine / @kelleydevineart, and this week, we present one of Houston’s larger-than-life artists, @mrd1987!

Love seeing our Adickes Art legacy program conservation lead — Houston’s arts darling, the artist and professor, Kelley Devine — called out and included — not once, but twice — in the @modernluxuryinteriors feature on @fadyarmanious and @bill.blvd!

Check out her Yellow Tree and Know You’re Being Judged At All Times works alongside brilliant works by @artistnicolaparente and @andywarholgallery.

If you’re craving a tiny or mid-sized interior sculpture work, or massive outdoor sculpture (à la Yellow Tree!), a monotype, drawing, or a painting outside of the @adickesart genre, we strongly suggest that you check out and book a studio appointment with @kelleydevineart for Q3!

Thank you, @jennifercope_ and team ML, for including Kel in your truly Bill-ievably Fady-lous feature. 👑🫶🏽🥂🎨 by @spotonpublicrelations
