We are coming to that time of year that most animal owners dread... firework season.

So as a pet care professional i want to try and do my bit to help those out there.

Let's talk about some of the laws around fireworks -

- People under the age of 18 are not allowed to posess or purchase fireworks. (regulation 4 of the Fireworks Regulations 2004) (regulation 31 of the Pyrotechnic Articles (Safety) Regulations 2015).

- Scotland has Firework Control Zones, which means it is an offence to use a firework in these areas unless it is an organised public display.

- Northern Ireland having the strictest rules, you must have a licence from the Department of Justice to buy, use or possess most fireworks.

- is explicit that fireworks, including sparklers, must not be set off or thrown in the street or other public places. Throwing or firing a firework in a street or public place is also an offence under section 80 of the Explosives Act 1875

- Fireworks must not be set off near livestock or horses in fields, or close to buildings housing livestock. Anyone planning a firework display in a rural area should warn neighbouring farmers in advance.

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October: No classes.

PUPPY SOCIAL

We had a great time last night in our puppy social class!

Learning appropriate socialisation; when to step in when play gets too much, what is good play and bad play!

We are very lucky to have such a nice venue that we can seperate the quiet pups from the excitable pups where needed so that everyone is comfortable!

We can’t forget to include play as part of our daily routine!

It’s easy to get caught up in the training or giving them a good walk, but building a bond through play and giving them some enjoyment is a massive importance.

Bucky absolutely loves a frisbee so when @tugenuff came out with one you can bet we got our hands on it!

Why do people get so offended by reactive dogs?

A lot of people don’t realise that reactivity can be fear and pain related. It can be genetic, or circumstantial.

It doesn’t all come down to “training”. All too often you hear people saying “well maybe you should train it better”.

Would you say that to someone who is scared of sharks or spiders? Tell them to train themselves out of their irrational fear. The difference being when a dog is scared of other dogs it’s usually not irrational.

A lot of dogs are scared of others because they are scared of getting hurt after previous experiences, they’re scared because they have been attacked at an earlier point.

Why is it expected for dogs to get over their fear but it’s okay when someone has a fear of cotton wool?

Fears cannot always be helped. What can be helped is how you show compassion towards others.

If you see a dog on lead give it space, if you see a dog barking move on with your day.

I guarantee you the owner is having a worse day than you. by @spotthatdogts

HALLOWEEN IS NEAR!

We all know that Halloween is a family friendly event, but lets try not to forget about our pets during these times.

For some animals these 'holidays' can be very overwhelming and possibly scary, and lets not unfortunately forget sometimes this season can be dangerous for pets.

So here are my tips for your pets this Halloween season -
🎃 Keep them inside after dark. Walk your dog before the nights come in, and restrict your cats access to the outside when its nighttime.
🎃 Keep them away from the front door. Trick or treaters may spook your pets.
🎃 Block out any outside lights or noises. We all know fireworks are well under way well before bonfire night.
🎃 Give your pets a safe space to relax.
🎃 Don't feel like you have to get your pets involved. Halloween is a human festivity, your pets dont understand it.
🎃 Keep any sweet treats, and party food well out of reach.

Knowing your dogs vocal cues and body language.

So this video is a prime example of knowing what your dog means. To some who don’t know my dogs they may think Woody is barking at Bucky.

But for me who knows my dog, I know this is a frustration bark for Woody. Woody barks when he doesn’t catch his toys, or if he chases something and can’t get it. He barks.

Vical cues from dogs aren’t always bad, and it can help us learn what they may need
