Boat fun facts time: the green and red buoys you seen in the harbor have meaning! Here in the US, you’ll hear the term “red right return” a lot, which means boaters should keep red buoys to starboard (right) and green buoys to port (left) when heading into a harbor/port. However, for most of the world, the opposite is true: boaters should keep green buoys to their right when heading home. Why? Legend has it that we mixed up our harbor markers during the American Revolution to confuse British ships, but I can’t find definite proof of that. It could just be another case of Americans being contrarian à la our refusal to let go of Fahrenheit, or the imperial measurement system.

A few weeks ago, I finally got to visit a place I’ve wanted to go for years: Peddocks Island in Boston Harbor. There are a lot of islands in our harbor, but this one is special: it’s home to an old group of Portuguese fishing cottages that date back to the turn of the 20th century. The state currently owns the island, and it’s made a deal with the current cottage residents (many of whom are descendants of the original island residents) that they can stay for the rest of their life but can’t pass the cottages on to their heirs. So, these little cottages are slowly being abandoned and boarded up as the last generation of owners dies. Many have already been torn down. But a good number are still occupied and well-maintained, including this iconic pink cottage with a million-dollar view of the harbor.

The east side of the island also features a mix of abandoned and used/restored buildings from its history as a military barracks. The little chapel pictured here was recently restored and can be rented out for weddings and events.

The rest of the island is largely wild. I went for a swim at one of its beaches, and saw a turkey (last slide) and deer during my short visit while managing to avoid the notorious ticks that inhabit this and many other Boston Harbor islands. The landscape reminds me of Cape Cod or Nantucket: green forests give way to grassy plains and sandbars. It’s hard to believe how close this island is to Boston because it feels like a world away.

The future of this island is unclear. There have been massive redevelopment schemes proposed that would turn the island into a semi-luxury tourist destination, and those plans were (unsurprisingly) met with criticism from a lot of Bostonians that want to keep this place the way it is. I’m undecided. It feels like a shame not to share the beauty and history of this place with more Bostonians—but does that come at too great a cost? Maybe, for once, we should keep our secret, sacred spaces as-is.
