We hosted our first female founders happy hour🍹

This was a curated group of female founders we've worked with based in NYC. It was so fun connecting in-person and bring women building cool brands together.

One day, I woke up to a cease and desist letter in my inbox.

Someone trademarked my brand name and they owned it. I was forced to rebrand everything in 30 days. It was a nightmare, to say the least.
My first business was a beauty brand.

I spent two years building this brand. We were in the Golden Globes Gift Bags and hundreds of stores around the world.

But there was one BIG problem:

I didn’t own my brand with a trademark.

After this, I became a trademark attorney to help other female founders own and keep their brands.

Today, I run one of the top 3 trademark law firms in the U.S. We’ve filed over 1,200 trademarks with a 99.8% success rate.

We’d love to help you own your brand too. Build your business on solid legal ground. Comment SETUP for our free workshop on starting your business legally.

Congrats to Taylor and Travis!! And congrats to our client @artifexfine for designing this stunning ring 💍

We protected kindreds name and Artifex fine jewelry to make sure they own both brands.

We have a feeling people will be searching for kindred lubeck for years to come. When that happens, they’ll be able to build on their reputation without worrying about copycats or brand confusion or someone else stealing their name!

Make sure to check out all gorgeous rings in the @artifexfine collection 💍 taken in New York, New York by @sproutlaw

Clients in the wild 👀

I protect my clients' brands on paper, but nothing beats spotting them on the shelf.

This week I found @lady.babka.co at Tiny Grocer and had to stop and grab a photo (and a babka, obviously).

Seeing a women owned brand you helped protect out in the real world never gets old. It's proof that the paperwork, the filings, and the waiting are all worth it when your name is officially yours.

If you're getting ready to launch a product, get into stores, or grow your brand, make sure your name is protected before someone else claims it.

Comment PROTECT and I'll send you the first step to securing your trademark.

Boo! AHHH, a copycat!👻

Without a trademark, watching someone copy your work is basically all you can do. With one, you have an actual process to make them stop.

If your brand doesn't have a trademark yet, don't wait for something to haunt you first. Comment OWN and I'll send you a link for a free trademark consultation. by @sproutlaw

That gap is not about ambition.

It's about conversations.

When I started my first brand, absolutely no one was having a conversation with me about trademarks.

About owning my brand.

It was seen as a cute little hobby or something not worth protecting.

100+ retail stores later and it wasn't a cute little hobby anymore.

I wish more women were talking about owning your brand at the time. Or maybe I would've owned mine. And then I wouldn't have lost it.

A trademark is the difference between owning your work and just hoping no one takes it.

If you are a woman running a business and you have not trademarked it yet, this is your sign.

This is why we're having those conversations now

We love a small business idea!

Seeing so many CPG brands reinventing products like mac and cheese right now, nostalgic products with a modern twist. And I love it.

Let's do the same thing with products like window cleaner. I don't see anyone in that space and that gap is worth paying attention to.

The brands that win are not the ones copying fastest, they are the ones asking the better question first. taken in Los Angeles, California by @sproutlaw

It is the same story every time, someone sees what is working and copies it instead of building their own thing.

I am on at least two calls a day dealing with copycats for my clients, and the ones with a trademark can shut it down so much faster than the ones who do not have one yet.

If you do not have a trademark, do future you a favor and get one.

It makes protecting your work so much easier when you actually need to. Comment COPYCAT below and I'll send you my free 15-minute webinar on how to STOP copycats in their tracks. by @sproutlaw

Huge congrats to Dr. Katie Pritchett on the official launch of By Design: Leadership Reframed Through Neuroscience.

This book is out in the world today and it is such a good one. If leadership and the way our brains actually work is your thing, go grab a copy, it is worth it.

So proud of you, @drkatiepritchett 🤍 by @sproutlaw

It's the spookiest month of the year, and nothing is spookier than getting a cease and desist telling you to drop the name or pay up.

I've seen it happen so many times.

This is why Sprout Law does a thorough trademark search for you.

It takes about 9 to 18 months to register a federal trademark with the USPTO.

That's not a typo, and it's not because anyone dropped the ball.

It's just how long the process takes when you factor in examination, publication, and opposition periods.

Here's the breakdown!

Filing and initial review takes about 4 to 5 months before an examining attorney reviews your application.

If approved, your mark is published in the Official Gazette for a 30 day opposition period where others can object.

Final registration takes another 2 to 3 months after publication if there are no issues.

This is exactly why starting early matters so much. The sooner you file, the sooner that clock starts ticking in your favor.

But really, why do hot girls have trademarks?

Because they know their brand is worth protecting. They're not waiting until someone else tries to claim their name, their logo, or their business identity.

They lock it down early so nobody can touch it.

If you've built something you're proud of, it's time to protect it too.
