Dear Tonga! I’ve heard so much about you. We never met but the food, music, and dances you brought back with mommy and daddy are so fruitful! I can’t wait to visit you and hear your stories. I cannot wait to taste the lu Pulu my grandma speaks of when she talks about home. And when grandpa yells about RESPECT and knowing your place; I knew, I came from great! I have so many questions and so much to tell you...I’m afraid, scared, and hesitant. You see, mama and daddy loves you so much, but they left to the America’s? to follow the American Dream? ...A place I call home! But even here, I live in fear, home less, and hungry. Mommy and daddy always says “this is the promise land!” And yet, I still feel left, with broken promises. All I want to do is create my own journey with you! And sing, dance, frolic in the ocean! 🌺 Meet SPULU — a Tongan/Pasifika multidisciplinary artist, choreographer, dancer, storyteller, and fashion creative rooted in Oakland.

SPULU’s work spans dance, fashion, digital media, and cultural storytelling, including collaborations with Levi’s, Nike OAK, Pinterest, and Microsoft; backup dancing for E-40 and Snoop Dogg; Standford Halftime, and participation in the Miss Heilala Tonga Pageant.

Their work has been featured at the de Young Museum, SFMOMA, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater/AileyCamp. SPULU is also a co-collaborator of Hella Pasifika, supporting Pasifika artists, culture, and community throughout the Bay Area. 🌺✨
