It’s Global James Bond Day, marking the 64th anniversary of the world premiere of the first 007 film, “Dr. No,” released on October 5, 1962. Author Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, “Casino Royale,” was released nine years earlier, on April 13, 1953. His work was inspired by his own experiences as a British Naval Intelligence officer during WWII.

While fictional, James Bond is a cultural icon and a gateway to the top-secret world of real intelligence.

Our museum features many 007 artifacts, including the Aston Martin DB5, first driven in the 1964 film “Goldfinger,” Bond’s Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Watch (on loan from Amazon) from “No Time to Die” (2021), and early editions of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels (on loan from the Michael L. VanBlaricum Collection).

The M-94 was widely used from 1922 to 1943 by the US Army as a tactical encoding/decoding device. It scrambled messages into secret text (encryption) and turned them back into readable words (decryption). Both the sender and receiver had to arrange their 25 numbered disks in an identical, pre-arranged sequence on the central rod. This specific order served as the secret daily key.

During WWII, the M-94 was replaced by the more complex M-209 (1943). Nearly 9,432 of the M-94s were made between their adoption in 1921 and their replacement by the M-209.

To smuggle banned Western music into the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s, bootleggers created bone records by etching audio grooves into discarded X-ray film. Our modern bone record recreation plays Led Zeppelin's "Going to California."

What do a shoe and a tree stump have in common? Both could be listening to you.

Surveillance devices, like these artifacts, let spies eavesdrop on their rivals. Learn more in our Tools of the Trade exhibit at the Spy Museum.

#TodayInSpyHistory Harry Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947, which created the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as an independent civilian intelligence agency. Its job was to coordinate US intelligence efforts and collect, evaluate, and share intelligence that affected national security.

The act also created the role of Director of Central Intelligence, who led both the CIA and the wider US Intelligence Community and served as the president's top intelligence adviser. President Truman named Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter as the newly named Agency's first director. About a third of its early staff came from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), America's WWII spy agency.

By 1953, the CIA had grown to six times its original size and earned a reputation for covert political actions and paramilitary operations. Every US President since Truman has relied on the CIA to deliver intelligence that shapes decisions on domestic and foreign policy.
