World Squash Day, taking place today, was born in the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 World Trade Center atrocity in New York. Former Scottish junior international Derek Sword was one of the many fatalities and WSD founder Alan Thatcher along with Sword’s friend Laurie Maclachlan decided that this would be a fitting tribute, while doing something positive for the sport.
A few months later on 11 January 2002 the inaugural event was an eight player challenge tournament al Lambs Club in London, including stars Peter Nicol, John white and Paul Price.
The occasion also marked the first 15 a side London-New York Challenge match for the Derek Sword Trophy donated by Derek’s friends and colleagues at Keefe Bruyette Woods in New York.
In the 25 years since WSD has expanded to become a genuinely worldwide squash event, to introduce players and promote squash generally. by @squashlibrary
