Dan. Rupert says that you should post some images that show that last night’s opening was well attended and that people were having a good time and then copy and paste this text: Last night, Sračok & Pöhlmann celebrated the grand opening of I, Santa at studio1.1, London, and it was nothing short of a resounding success. The gallery was abuzz with an impressive turnout of art lovers, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts who came together to experience this bold and thought-provoking exhibition. Adding to the festive spirit, the event featured live music that set the perfect tone for the night, complemented by an array of drinks that kept the celebrations going. The synergy between the art, music, and the vibrant crowd made for an unforgettable evening.

We are thrilled by the warm reception and look forward to welcoming more visitors in the coming weeks. taken in studio1.1 London by @sracokpohlmann

Matthew Collings, ‘Martin Kippenberger paints Santa stopping a tank — “War Bad” says Santa.’
Coloured pencils on paper | 30x21cm | £500

This drawing shows the German artist Martin Kippenberger with one of the several paintings he produced in the early 1990s where there’s a kind of bitter joke about liberal idealism — a Santa Claus stops a tank, and the title is Krieg böse. “War wicked.” I understand the meaning not to be for or against war but a staging of the problem of discerning values in a society based purely on lying and hypocrisy. Of course “Santa” doesn’t exist. The scene is an absurdity. But who’s targeted? All of us. So the intellectual tradition that this series of pictures by Kippenberger — who was born at the same time as me, mid 50s — is in, is the tradition of punk. A tradition of impotence — both recoiling at impotence and refusing all illusions around it. Satire and jokes and surreal upside-down-ness are the only emotional tones available. The feeling is that something must be shattered. Something is wrong. Kippenberger’s relentless satire is not jading or exhausting, because it’s accompanied by an artistic energy and invention which thrill and inspire. I did this drawing as part of an ongoing project of thousands of drawings whose overriding theme is “alternative art history.” They all depict art and artists throughout time from prehistory to today. The work is very loose but I try to make every scene visually convincing in some surprise way, and that’s something I appreciate about Kippenberger’s output generally and this absurd series of images of Santa stopping war, in particular.

Santa Selfie 1, egg tempera on panel, 20cm diametre, 2022. £600

This little self-portrait study dressed as a sort-of-Santa was inspired by the wonderful self-portraits of Chardin, which he made late in life, and drawn in pastel, in the 1770s. My painting is playful and a little cheeky like the Chardins, it involves ribbons and dressing up, and it is about seeing - looking/seeing/questioning. It asks perhaps what it means to see one’s own image, and suggests that we accrue many meanings that are added, unintentionally or intentionally, by our social and physical place in the world. It asks questions about what this could mean visually. And it has some fun doing it.

Peace, Fr Matthew

Why not come to the opening party (Saturday 7 December) of (quite probably) the last but also (fairly probably) the best Sračok & Pöhlmann exhibition.

There will be live jazz by Klara and friends.

There will be prints and (not too expensive) paintings for sale which would make great Xmas presents (for those who can afford to of course).
