Concrete Girl Summer 💦 Above, a carousel of the building of our staircase, something we had to do twice. Our Goa shop turns 3 and we’re finally done fixing things from year one.

The restroom wasn’t functional until this year. A full redo, floor up. Instagram shows you the pretty parts, not the plumbing.

Here’s something we learnt the hard way: when a design firm is involved, the contractor is often the one executing someone else’s plan rather than making the calls, especially on things like plumbing, electricals and the inner workings of a room that don’t always factor into a mood board. And when that direction comes from a place of inexperience, everyone can end up worse off, the contractor building something that doesn’t quite work and the client left living with it.

Lesson: hire a contractor / design firm who genuinely understands plumbing, electricals and the inner mechanics of a build, preferably one based in the state you’re working in. Go by recommendations. Lots of recccos.

And if you’re a creative, do it yourself where you can, it’s honestly fun. Ultimately we realised we did a lot of the thinking ourselves, much like we did with our Bandra shop/gallery and @popluneshop.

Our next #LuneBookClub pick is Dead and Alive: Essays by Zadie Smith.

Smith’s fourth essay collection brings together thirty pieces on art, culture and public life, from meditations on artists like Toyin Ojih Odutola and Celia Paul to essays mourning writers such as Joan Didion and Toni Morrison, alongside reflections on politics and public life today.

The session, moderated by Namita Dubey ( @namita_dubey ), will take place early next month. Date to be announced, we’re looking at either an in-person session in Bombay or online, so watch this space. x by @sreeshas
