If you’re a new comedian, here’s something nobody told me when I started:

Not everyone offering you an opportunity is actually offering you an opportunity.

You’re hungry for stage time. Someone promises exposure, connections, maybe even bigger gigs. Sounds great! But there’s a catch: you have to bring ten people.

When you’re new, your audience is mostly friends, family, and a few people who haven’t figured out how to say no to you yet. And there are only so many times they’ll pay to hear the same jokes before reconsidering the friendship.

I learned about broken promises firsthand.

Eight years ago, I entered a comedy competition. The prize was two paid weekend gigs at the club. I won! I was thrilled.

One small problem: I never got the gigs.

I’ve reminded the club and its owner over the years. Eight years later, I’m still waiting. Apparently, the real competition was seeing how long I’d wait before giving up.

I’m sharing this because I know how exciting an opportunity can seem when you’re starting out.

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with producers selling tickets or comics helping promote shows. Shows cost money. And plenty of producers, coaches, and clubs genuinely support new talent.

But asking comics to sell tickets is different from promising career opportunities you can’t deliver.

So ask questions. If someone promises introductions, what do those actually involve? If they promise exposure, exposure to whom? If you’re required to bring ten people, what happens if you bring five? If you win a prize, when and how will it be delivered?

And ask yourself: am I being booked for my comedy, my ability to sell tickets, or both? You deserve to know.

Not every spot has to be paid or lead to something bigger. Sometimes a spot is just a spot, and that’s fine, as long as everyone is honest about it.

Pursue your dreams. Take chances. Get on stage. Just do your research, ask questions, and don’t let excitement override judgment.

Your dream is worth pursuing. Just make sure you’re clear on what you’re getting into.
