It likely won't surprise some of you when I say I was not encouraged to stuff those balloons under my shirt as a child. As offensive as it might seem, I honestly did it because I wanted to be like Dolly Parton. 🤷‍♀️ I remember seeing her face on the covers of my grandpa's old records and listening to her. Then, going on to see her in Steel Magnolias. I always thought she was beautiful. I also loved her rhinestone fashion. 🤩

Over the years, I kept a journal of inspirational quotes, most of which were said by her.

"If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one."

"We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails."

"Find out who you are and do it on purpose."

"...If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain."

My favorite, "Being a star just means that you just find your own special place, and that you shine where you are."

In addition to beautiful and talented, I thought she was intelligent and hilarious. Mostly, what I came to respect as an adult was her generosity and kindness. I won't lie... I'd often see her pair up with other artists, and I'd think, "How in the world did that come about?" And I'd realize she genuinely lived a life with no judgement toward others, making her stand out from nearly everyone in society, myself included.

She was just another person. But she was a person who always chose happiness and kindness, making her a rare gem. 🩷🦋 @dollyparton by @srgraham_editor

The walls are painted and the new doors are stained. The flooring, baseboards, fan, and blinds have been installed. Most of the furniture has been placed.

After a year and a half of remodeling our home, I am slowly unpacking my office boxes. Yes, the shelves of my bookcase have themes. Yes, this section is all related to Scotland--home in my heart. The bear carving went straight from my suitcase into a box last June when we returned from our visit there. My son bought it for me when we came across an artist on the streets of Edinburgh. 💙 The rest speaks for itself.

Unexpected things are happening for Shaila Holmes and I couldn’t be more grateful!

I almost ignored this email because I was convinced it was a scam. 😅 Thankfully, I looked into it before deleting it!

Turns out that because Shaila Holmes Fairy Detective earned a BookLife Editor’s Pick, it’s been selected for a special collection that helps indie books reach public libraries through OverDrive and other library eBook platforms.

Moments like this remind me that you never know where one “yes,” one story, or one dream will lead. I’m incredibly thankful and excited to see where Shaila’s journey goes next.

Thank you to everyone who’s been cheering her on. This adventure just keeps getting better! 💜
