Spectral Variations (Spektral Çeşitlemeler)

When Isamu Noguchi spoke of ‘listening to stone’, he was not just rhapsodizing metaphorically, but in fact describing an ancient sculptors’ technique of tapping a block of stone around all sides to divine its inherent structure. Out of the omnipresent phenomenon of sound there are also inherent forms and transcendent beauty which mathematics and music attempt to carve out of the air, like the sculptor’s stone. Though works of music, sound, video and sculpture, Spectral Variations traces the chaotic world of sound all around us, to the ‘invisible architecture’ of musical sound in the harmonic series, to the human intervention of tuning which attempts to bend these phenomena to our own cultural will.

Today is the 100th birthday of John Coltrane.
I think his music was and continues to be a gift to the world, and I can truly say that it changed my life. Quoting his collaborator Archie Shepp, “Coltrane actually raised this music from the secular to an area of serious, religious world music. It was like being in church.”
Today and everyday, let’s thank the universe for sending him to us.

This is the only known footage of John Coltrane performing “A Love Supreme.” Filmed at the Festival International de Jazz d’Antibes in Juan-les-Pins, France on July 26, 1965, it captures one of only a small handful of documented live performances of the suite, as Coltrane passed away just two and a half years after the album’s release. by @srokasonic
