Happy Feast of St. John Henry Newman! (October 9th)

Ever wonder why we call ourselves the Newman Club and why we meet at a Newman Center?

The answer goes back more than 140 years!

In 1883, Catholic students at the University of Wisconsin formed the Melvin Club, an early effort to help Catholic students remain connected to their faith while pursuing higher education at a public university. A decade later, in 1893, students at the University of Pennsylvania established the first club explicitly named after John Henry Newman, honoring his vision for the relationship between faith, reason, and university life.

But why was this movement necessary?

As increasing numbers of Catholics attended public universities, students recognized the need for a community where they could grow in their faith, receive spiritual guidance, study Catholic teaching, and build friendships rooted in Christ. These early student-led groups, often supported by local priests and parishes, became the foundation of the Catholic campus ministry movement in the United States.

The movement continued to grow. In 1908, Catholic student clubs began organizing nationally, paving the way for a wider network of Newman Clubs and, eventually, the Newman Centers we recognize today. These communities became places where students could encounter Christ through the sacraments, prayer, fellowship, service, and the intellectual tradition of the Catholic Church.

Named after St. John Henry Newman, the great English theologian, educator, and Doctor of the Church, these communities carry forward a lasting conviction: faith and reason belong together, and the pursuit of knowledge should never be separated from the pursuit of truth.

Today, our Newman Club at Sul Ross State University continues this legacy. We are more than a student organization; we are a Catholic community seeking to grow together in holiness, deepen our understanding of the faith, and bring the love of Christ to our campus.

As we celebrate his feast day, may St. John Henry Newman inspire us to pursue truth wholeheartedly and to make Christ the center of our academic, spiritual, and personal lives.

S’mores, Scripture, and a night gathered around the fire 🔥📖🤎

Tuesday night we slowed down from the busyness of college and made time to simply be together—to laugh, share s’mores, open our Bibles, and talk about what it looks like to keep our relationship with God burning.

We talked about how a fire has to be tended and fed to keep burning, and how our faith can be the same way. We reflected on what we’re feeding in our own lives, who we are when nobody is watching, and what it looks like to turn back to God when our fire starts to feel a little low.

Before the night ended, each of us wrote down one intention: “What am I going to use to keep my fire for God burning?” We placed those intentions into the fire as a reminder that our faith isn’t meant to burn for just one night. It’s something we’re called to continue nurturing, choosing, and living out every day.

So grateful for nights like this, for the people God has placed around us, and for the reminder that we don’t have to walk this faith journey alone. 🤎

Here’s to keeping the fire burning!!🔥✝️ by @srsunewman

Brothers and sisters, we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our presenters from the Knights of Columbus, Spirit & Grace Choir, and Guadalupanas for sharing your time, experiences, and ministries with us!

A special thank you to the Bucho and Joanne Garcia for sponsoring our meal. The red enchiladas were absolutely delicious!

We began the evening around the table, sharing a meal and fellowship, followed by a reflection on the history of lay ministry and the importance of recognizing that each of us has unique gifts that can be used to serve others and build up the Church based on Scripture and tradition.

Our presenters then shared how they live out that mission through their own ministries. We ended the night together by singing the Prayer of St. Francis—a beautiful reminder of the call to become instruments of Christ’s peace.

Many gifts. One mission. One Church. Till next time

Our first Bible Study of the semester!!!💛📖✝️

What a beautiful night spent breaking bread, opening our Bibles, sharing our stories, and growing together in faith. We were so blessed to welcome so many new faces into our Newman family, and it was such a joy to see people from all different walks of life come together with open hearts and a desire to know Christ more deeply.

We shared a beautiful dinner, had honest conversations, spent time in the Word, and were blessed to have Fr. Chicas join us and speak some much-needed life and truth into our hearts. Nights like this are such a beautiful reminder that our faith was never meant to be lived alone.

Thank you to everyone who came, whether you’ve been here from the beginning or this was your very first night with us. We are so excited for all that God has in store for this community.

This is only the beginning.
