Launch success for BEXUS 39 balloon!

Today, students from across Europe saw their experiments take flight as the BEXUS 39 balloon launched from Esrange Space Center.

Every year, the @rexus_bexus campaigns bring students from across Europe to Esrange Space Center to take their research beyond the classroom.

Through the program, university teams design and build their own experiments, then test them under real flight conditions on sounding rockets and stratospheric balloons.

BEXUS 38 and 39 balloons is underway, with around 100 students on site preparing for the upcoming launches. Stay tuned as their experiments take to the skies above northern Sweden.

Maturation of technologies for space reusability: European prototype Themis completes second wet dress rehearsal at Esrange Space Center ❄️🚀

On September 29, 2026, the European reusable stage prototype Themis successfully conducted a second wet dress rehearsal of the flight chronology as part of the SALTO (Reusable Strategic Space Launcher Technologies & Operations) experimental campaign led by @arianegroup at Esrange Space Center in Sweden, owned and operated by @ssc_space.

This wet dress rehearsal of the flight chronology contributes to the technological maturation of the Themis system. ArianeGroup teams have achieved new milestones in repeating the "synchronized sequence" (the final automatic phase of the countdown), as well as in exploring the "post-flight" sequence with the use of a fleet of robots designed to secure the vehicle after landing.

These elements mark progress in the operational mastery of the system. Conducting this test has enabled the collection of essential data for the continuation of the SALTO campaign. The teams are now working on defining a window for the next test. by @ssc_space

Another successful rocket mission from Esrange Space Center!
The @germanaerospacecenter (DLR) MAPHEUS®-17 sounding rocket launched on October 1, carried science and technology experiments to 291 km altitude.

During the flight, researchers gained about seven minutes of microgravity to test new technologies and conduct cutting-edge research, including cancer studies, material science and student-built experiments.

We are again proud to see SSC Space’s Shared Module onboard as well, helping more teams access space through shared infrastructure and lower mission costs.

Another important milestone for our SSC Space optical communications program. 📡✨

Our optical ground station in Western Australia has now successfully completed its upgrade by Cailabs and is operational, supporting both SDA and CCSDS laser communication standards for space-to-Earth communication. The station is part of our growing optical communications network and service offering.

As demand for high-speed satellite data delivery continues to grow, optical communications will play an increasingly important role in bringing more data from space to Earth, faster and more securely.

“A big thank you to the teams from SSC Space and Cailabs for their dedication and collaboration in bringing this capability into operation”, says Hanna Sundberg, Optical Program Manager at SSC Space.

Nordic collaboration in focus at Space Innovation Forum 2026 🚀
Today, leaders from across the Nordic space sector gathered in Kiruna as the two-day Space Innovation Forum officially got underway. Hosted by Space Sweden North, the conference brings together industry, research, government, defense, and innovators to strengthen cooperation and create new opportunities across the Nordic region.

🛰️ Cluster-II has completed its mission.

On September 1, Tango transmitted its final telemetry signal before safely re-entering Earth's atmosphere, marking the end of the @europeanspaceagency's Cluster-II mission after more than 25 years in orbit.

Since its launch in 2000, the four spacecraft have provided unique insights into how the solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic environment, significantly advancing our understanding of space weather and the magnetosphere.

Over the years, @ssc_space has been proud to support the mission through routine spacecraft monitoring and critical recovery activities – including the end-of-life operations for the remaining two satellites, Samba and Tango.

Together with the previous re-entries of Salsa and Rumba, this marked the completion of a mission that has delivered groundbreaking scientific results for more than two decades.

Congrats to everyone involved, and a special kudos to the SSC Space service team at #ESOC 👏

Research infrastructure plays an important role in advancing our understanding of the near-space environment. With the investment in a new optical observatory, we are taking an important next step, enhancing our capabilities and creating new opportunities for research.

The new KEOPS Observatory at Esrange Space Center is co-financed by SSC Space, @region_norrbotten , and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through @tillvaxtverket.

The facility brings together scientific instruments used to study auroras, space weather, the upper atmosphere, and other ionospheric phenomena.
