The Waiting Room

Acrylic, charcoal, wire, old house keys, and someone’s torn-up art I found on the streets of the city.

I started this painting back in early August, then left it untouched. After beginning, I found the torn artworks scattered along the streets. Pieces of someone else’s outlet. When I pieced together the few I had taken from the many, they expressed vulnerability, shame, and confusion surrounding identity. It broke my heart. I wanted to give whoever made them a hug.

I took these pieces as a kind of gift, something left behind that still carried emotion and meaning. I wanted to give them purpose, to transform something that once felt discarded into something cared for. For two months I looked at it daily, not knowing how to move forward, while somehow knowing exactly how I wanted to at the same time.

It became part of my environment, a quiet reminder. Nearly three months later, on a random Saturday evening, I decided to finish it. I sat down with trust in myself to create something I found beautiful and hopefully a small redefinition of avoidance and pain. taken in Firenze, Italy by @ssienarenee
